Pelikan Edelstein Onyx

I was pleasantly impressed with Pelikan's Edelstein Onyx Black. I tested it from an Aurora Ipsilon with a fine nib. The ink is a moderately dark black ink and performs well on a variety of types of paper. Unfortunately, it costs around $22 for a bottle of 50ml, a little too much given more reasonably priced alternatives (you can get 100ml of Perle Noire, a comparable if not better ink, for about the same price). Its also not water proof. I like the ink and will definitely use it, but don't see myself buying any more if only because of the price.

Wow, super-comprehensive, thank you for this review. I like it, but as you say, many other blacks available at significantly lower prices.

How did you perform the water test? Although not waterproof, this ink looks like it as a good degree of water resistance.

Looks like a nice black ink, but personally see no reason to get this over Aurora.

I ran each strip of paper independently under the faucet for about 1 minute and set them aside to dry. The ink runs pretty easily off the Rhodia and higher quality papers but as you point out soaked well enough into the more absorbent papers to survive at least a trip to the car in the rain or spilled coffee

Truth be told, I have to agree. Its a nice black but doesn't offer anything like permanence to justify its price.

Great review..

Great Idea to test the ink on severa papers.

I am a Pelikan Fan... Both the pens and the inks.

Those 4001 inks are super especially for that price.

I do believe after FPs the Inkmanufacturers are doing some PIMP-UP-my ink too

I believe that those inks have improved in comparisonn to 4001 but NOT that much... The bottle is boosting the cost price hence boosting the sals price.... Add to that the "exclusive" idea and add some more Dollars...

Nothing against that.... I love Pelikans but If I take an empty bottle of Dom Perignon and Pee in it ...

It looks very fancy but it tastes like..... No wonder while the same pee was in there haha

Tricked throughout the centuries...

For centuries people had been tricked by kings & "religion-alism"

In the 20th century people got tricked by communism

Today people get tricked by (neo)capitalism :)
