First, I'd like to thank visvamitra. I’ve always enjoyed your reviews and comparisons, and I especially love those ink splashes. The format of my present comparison has been largely inspired by yours.

INTRODUCTION

The current Sailor Four Seasons line has a total of 8 inks, two for each season: (the meanings are from Japanese interpretations on the Internet)

post-113900-0-39043700-1416121811_thumb.jpg

Spring:

Nioi-Sumire: “Sweet violet”, the flower, which has a sweet scent and is used for fragrances and perfumes.

Miruai: “Dark bluish green”, a tradition colour of Japan.

Summer:

Souten: “High sky”, the cloudless blue sky in hot summer.

Doyou: “Midsummer day”, referring to the scorched earth in canicular days.

Autumn:

Yama-dori: “Copper pheasant”, referring to the feathers of beautiful mountain birds.

Oku-yama: “Remote mountain”, forest of red leaves in autumn days.

Winter:

Tokiwa-Matsu: “Evergreen pine”, referring to pine trees which are still green in winter.

Shigure: “Drizzles”, which refers to the cold drizzles in early winter.

The inks come in standard Sailor ink bottle with a “filler”, very practical. The following samples are all written or drawn on Rhodia No. 16 Dotpad or unlined.

Nioi-Sumire: a clear violet. Not too dark.

post-113900-0-99792100-1416121783_thumb.jpg
Miruai: a green-black with maybe a bit of blue.

post-113900-0-78682700-1416121779_thumb.jpg
Souten: a cerulean blue. It’s dark enough for some serious writing, darker than Iroshizuku Kon-Peki.

post-113900-0-45550700-1416121777_thumb.jpg
Doyou: a brown-black. Could be mistaken as a black without side-by-side comparison. Very very lubricating, writes very smoothly.

post-113900-0-89841700-1416121774_thumb.jpg
Yama-Dori: the ink that everyone talks about. A Teal. Very similar to Iroshizuku Ku-Jaku.

post-113900-0-52283800-1416121772_thumb.jpg
Oku-Yama: a reddish purple (or a purplish red) that has great sheen.

post-113900-0-39299000-1416121770_thumb.jpg
Tokiwa-Matsu: a yellowish green, but not too yellow. It’s a very interesting ink. When it is freshly written, it’s a deep green, but as it dries it takes on the yellow tint. It’s like green leaves becoming yellow.

post-113900-0-95957300-1416121767_thumb.jpg
Shigure: a purple-black. Darker and less blue than Nioi-Sumire. Very lubricating as well.

MORE SHEEN
(All of them have sheen. Some are spectacular.)

post-113900-0-17570700-1416122356_thumb.jpg

Nioi-Sumire: a red silver sheen.
Miruai: the sheen is usually not visible in normal writing.
Souten: amazing red sheen in normal writing.
Doyou: a silvery sheen only visible in a dries drop of ink. Not visible in writing.
Yama-Dori: need I say anything? A purple sheen that many seek after.
Oku-Yama: amazing green sheen.
Tokiwa-Matsu: lovely red sheen, very easy to attain.
Shigure: great silver sheen, also easily noticeable.

WRITING SAMPLES
(All of these are written with Platinum 3776 Century M nib. It’s not a wet writer so the sheen is not evident. But with a wet pen the sheen is amazing. They are all very saturated inks, the shading depends on your pen. I think Souten, Yama-Dori and Oku-Yama have some shading potential.)

post-113900-0-58501600-1416122522_thumb.jpg

In the following sample, the ink names on the right are written with a dip pen. The sheen is more noticeable, though not so on the scan.

DRY TIME
None of them are long-driers, unlike some Noodler’s.

WATER-RESISTANCE

All of them fare quite well in terms of water-resistance. The drip test shows they will all be still very legible if you accidentally drop some water on them. The soak test shows that the blue and black components in the inks are the main contributors to their water-resistance.

SUMMARY

I find all Sailor inks are well behaved, including these 8. The water-resistance is quite impressive. Some might not be very easy to clean, like the blues and the red, but they are not trouble either. Almost all of the 8 inks are on the darker side, making them more legible than some other inks (inks like some J. Herbin’s). But I wish there were one or two brighter colours in this series, like Apricot from the old Four Seasons line.

I like all of these inks, for their behaviour, their colour and their great sheen, except maybe Miruai. Miruai is one of the last in the series that I bought. Miruai is just not the colour for me. It’s very similar to Private Reserve’s Ebony Blue, only even greener (from bluer to greener: R&K Verdigris, PR Ebony Blue, Sailor Miruai).

My favourites: Souten, Tokiwa-Matsu, Shigure, Oku-Yama.
My least favourite: Miruai.
In between: Yama-Dori is too similar to Ku-Jaku, I wouldn’t have got this if I hadn’t wanted to complete the whole line, but it’s not a bad colour. Doyou is a bit boring, being so similar to black, but I think it would be a good choice for formal situations, and it’s very lubricative. I’m still waiting for Nioi-Sumire to grow on me.

So what are your favourites?

Thank you for doing such an extensive review Igsoltek! I love the side by side photos and scans of the splashes; they show off that gorgeous Sailor sheen so well!

Thank you so much for this! I received a sample of Tokiwa-Matsu last week and I love it so much I'll definitely be ordering a bottle. After seeing your comparisons, I think I'll be ordering a few more samples, too. :ninja:

Great review! I really like this line of inks as well. I agree that a brighter colour or two would have been nice. I have bottles of Tokiwa Matsu, Shigure, and Yama Dori and they're all so wonderful. However, I do find that Shigure has a long dry time- like, it dries quickly enough, but I've been able to smudge writing on Rhodia paper even an hour later. Still, it's a great ink.

Thank you so much for this wonderful review. You have really peaked my interact with the Shigure, I have been looking for a nice dark blue that is not a blue-Black. I was looking at Diamine midnight and twilight as well as De Atramentis Sherlock Holmes. I may now go a completely different direction :)

Thank you again

First of all... AMAZING WORK!!!!!!!!!!!! If imitation is the highest form of flattery... Vis should feel in heaven.. :happycloud9: ... Really good job...

I find Souten almost identical to Sky High... so I didn't bother getting a bottle..

I actually don't care much about Ku-Jaku... but I am head over heels for Yama-dori... Interesting... ;)

Favorites: Yama-Dori, Tokina-Matsu, Oku-yama and Shigure

Not crazy about: Doyou (too black), Nioi-Sumire (not special enough), Souten (too Sky High) and Miruai (too dark green)... :D

I just got Oku-Yama and I adore it. It's got so much going on.

I will get Yama-Dori as soon as I am done with Ku-Jaku, which is a favorite of mine. I think Yama-Dori has better shading/sheen from what I've seen in comparisons online.

I want Shigure and Tokiwa-Matsu but I have Diamine Bilberry and Sailor Epinard and they are close enough for me.

My favorites are Yama-Dori and Shigure.

Shigure is indeed very lubricating and makes my Lamy 2000 glide across the paper.

Superb work on these reviews - thank you :happyberet:

My favourites are also Yama-Dori and Shigure. I find that as well as lubrication, Shigure flows so freely that it adds a fraction to line width.

This is a great review!

We are only allowed to use black and blue ink at work, and purple is usually pharmacist ink... Would the Shigure pass for a dark blue? I also love the Yama Dori. The Miruai I wanted because a black green may be an interesting way to be unique using a black, but it looks too light and too green. Thank you!

I'm not sure... Shigure looks still quite purple rather than blue to me, but it's quite a dark colour. What about giving Doyou a try? It's a brown black. It would surely pass for a black, but you will still know it's not a black but a brown deep in your rebellious heart  . I heard that Noodler's Zhivago is a very dark green black, you can check that out too.

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:33

    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27
I've had a Pelikan M805 for a couple of years now and cannot get the nib to write without singing. I've worked on dozens of nibs with great success. Ny suggestion about what's going wrong? 😑

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! I'm looking to repair some cheap pens that are starving for ink yet filled, and eventually get new nibs; and development of repair skills (an even longer learning curve than my art studies - lol). Perhaps it's like saying Beetlejuice 3 times to get that person to appear, though with @Sailor Kenshin you only have to say it twice?

@Seney724. The pen was recently disassembled and cleaned, but the nib and feed were not properly inserted into the holder. I'm in Maryland.
    • Diablo 26 Aug 21:32
@Seney724. The nib section needs to be adjusted properly.

Hello, could someone recommend a reliable venue: on line or brick and mortar in Fairfax, VA or Long Island, NY to purchase the soft parts and a converter to restore my dad's Sheaffer Legacy? please. Thanks a mill.

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen
