I'm looking to get another Carene. Not interested in F or XF. I already have one with an M nib and another with a B...

Thinking mayyybeeee of the factory stub. Can anyone give me an idea of how the stub differs from both the M and the B?

Thanks! :D

I ordered a factory stub on the Blue Gunmetal Carene this spring from nibs.com. It is a rhodium plated, 18k gold, inlaid nib. That plating and inlaid part make it pretty much a nail. However, I can tell you that the stub is standard at 1.1 m and I had John measure it so that it would not surprise me by being wider. It is right on.

I have a stub but am not keen, it's too close to the medium...IMHO. Maybe the way I write.

You have mentioned you did not want a fine so that's all I can offer because I am not into obliques.

A 1.1 mm stub would seem to be almost broad by US standards, maybe just medium in the judgement of European writers.

I have a "medium italic" Parker Sonnet, another Newell-Rubbermaid company, and it writes a 1.1 mm line. Their "broad italic" nib is about 1.5 mm in my pen, and is really a stub.

Stub feels between M and B to me.

And now I'm re-thinking the F. Do you happen to have one? How 'F' is it?

M is narrow for me, so I defer to others.

Have a nice OB, but I run that way anyway. No writing samples, but rotate your paper 45 degrees & write with your B to get an idea. If you don't love obliques, don't go there.

I know it's not the exact nib comparison you'd like, but here are Carene Deluxe F and M nibs:

Both write wonderfully :)

I had to go to an EF nib to get one I thought was fine, the fines seeming more like fine-to-medium.

There's no such thing as a 'comparison I don't want.' Thanks! Great photo.

And thanks, one and all. I just found a deal on a color I wanted, with M nib, so now I guess I have two Ms and a B.

I still want a black Carene. And, uhm...gray? And definitely something green. What are all the official colors anyway?

What I'm saying is, I am now officially on the hunt for Deals, so I can have a Carene with every stock nib, just as I'm slowly doing with Sailors.

If I understand right, the section/nib is available by itself, so you can replace that M with anything you prefer. I've got a Carene... I think is a fine... and it's a fine writer nothing wrong with it, but it doesn't excite me at all. I may try a different nib.

My Coral Carene was the first-ever 'big deal' fountain pen for me (I had been using Sheaffer NN and Rotring ArtPens), so it holds a special place in my heart. I just saw one on fleabay for about $600!

I am always on the lookout for deals on Carenes, but none of them ever seem to come with a Fine nib

HI, you buy one of those £98 pens with medium nib from Amazon and then pop it in the post to Watreman UK for a nib change. Costs about £4.30 for the 1st Class signed for post. I still thin £102 is a VG price for a Carene. Unless you can get one for £20 ;)

My new Carene is here! Loaded it with Bernanke Bleed, I mean, Blue, filled the con, twisted the piston to expel ink back into the vial ... and had to reload until some of the ink dropped back out.

That is a MONSTER feed. Which I knew about thanks to another Carene thread.

The medium nib is as good as the one I have, though this is rhodium. The body color is a matte deep blue. And now I am certain that I DO need both the F and XF. And maybe eventually the factory stub.

Thanks, one and all. I'm really in for it now. -_-

Let the section with converter rest in the ink for a night to prime it real good...

As you said, that is a monster feed. See Force's recent post about rhodinating nibs for an exploded view.... (NOT to be done by the amateur!!!!)
