Pen Wiper

Hi all! Akkerman's do a very handsome-looking pen wiper, but I was wondering - what do you do when a pen-wiper like that gets too inky to use? Are they washable, or do you have to chuck them away and get a new one? If the latter, what's the advantage over just using a bit of kitchen towel?

Thanks for any insight! :)

The round chamois leather one? The chamois should be washable but the leather tab attached to it might not hold up as well. You could always buy some chamois and make your own wipe.

That's the one! I am intrigued by any pen-related stuff so I've ordered one, but as you say I've no idea how it would stand up to washing (besides, a lot of ink is permanent!). I wonder how long you can use it for before it gets too inky to use?

I have one of those Akermann pen wipes made of the Chamois material. I too am worried about the little leather tab, so, I have not even used it!!!! Instead, I use a couple of ink rags that I have cut out of old, soft dish-towels.

A dry cleaner that cleans leather clothing will have special equipment to clean a chamois that won't harm the leather.

+1 to both of you. Of course, a lint free paper towel will also work..... :P

You make one :D

All you need is an old t-shirt and some thread. Also, this is bigger than needs to be ... you can make them small enough to fit in a pen case.

Back in the '50s, we used to wipe down a wet cars with leather chamois skins. They held up quite well to soap and water. Get them wet and wring them dry. They held up for years with that kind of treatment. I didn't think you could buy chamois skin anymore. Soft tanned buckskin would probably work just as well.

I just found them at Amazon, poised for car care http://www.amazon.com/Detailers-Choice-10X02200-Genuine-Leather/dp/B000EFCPMC/ref=sr_1_3?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1409846431&sr=1-3&keywords=chamois+leather

For anyone who prefers not to Amazon I suspect the local car stuff places may have - if one chain does not carry, I'd try a different chain, or else an independent car parts store, if such is available.

My pen wipes are squares of much-washed flannel. I have one I've used for more than a decade, and it still does the job.
