Best Brown Ink For Drawing?

CrimsonM

Recommended Posts

Requirements: should be able to be very dark and wash to a nice lighter color - full value range preferably. Water soluble, I like to use a waterbrush over the lines.

I have a bottle of diamine ancient copper; its a nice color but too saturated and the ink globs up after a while on the nib.

Diamine ochre is a rich brown, I think less saturated than Ancient Copper. If you'd like a sample PM me your address & I'll pop you some in the post.

Edit to add: thinking about the nib globs, there are some orange or red dyes that seem to do this - come out of solution & crystallise on the nib. I haven't seen this with Ochre but I had it in a pen that didn't get much chance to sit around.

Ok, considering your name I have to mention my favorite brown. I actually JUST used it 5 minutes ago to make a triangle in a drawing I just started.

Diamine Rustic Brown. It has a nice red tinge to it. I absolutely love it. Red is my favorite color so I fell for this really easily.

Don't know about drawing with it, but the Yama-Guri has a very pleasant richness to it. Not sure how it would look washed over with a brush, but the swab tests might give you some idea.

I drew with my only brown ink lately and I like the result. It's Pilot Iroshizuku's tsukushi, a nice warm brown with a reddish tint. I like writing with this ink too but have never tried washing over though.

Most of the browns are wonderful. Here is PR Copper Burst and MB Toffee Brown.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

How timely.

I've just mentioned to a couple of FPN members that my long long search for something to replace the incredible Parker Mocha seems to have come to an end.

Cult Pens Deep Dark Brown arrived yesterday - absolutely gorgeous !

No red or pink in the wash - unlike Yama Guri, Brown Boron and MB Toffee Brown. Don't get me wrong all these produce a beautiful line colour but metamorphosise (?), for the worse, when washed over.

Lie de The is an incredible ink but too yellow in the wash.

Kiowa Pecan is also stunning to write with but too orange in the wash.

The Deep Dark Brown is lovely and dark in line, nice and earthy and shades.

Really looking forward to playing with this one.

I'll post a sketch or two soon.

The closest I've seen on screen to the real colour is actually of fibredrunk's wonderfull home made ink - the July 2012 mix which is stunning.

I'll post something of mine as well. This is with noodler's bulletproof black.

I am not an artist ( :( ), just a chronic doodler. Here I used my Lamy Safari with ef nib and Monteverde Brown ink.
