Hello, thanks for sharing. New to FPN and the hobbie, sorry about that.

I have a very basic but important question considering that pen collections and investments are not effortless. After a very long research, I have reduce my desire to japanese pens. And actually I have bought exactly the Nioh pen shared in this forum.

Are Nioh 88th anniversary 880 pens maki-e handmade? Is actually the artist doing 100% of the 880 pens? Where can I read about this?

Thanks!

In my knowledge when an artist is commited to a design he will do al the pens. But he does not make them all at once.

There will be a small part that have been pre-ordered and some extra and afterwards they will be made by order. In my opinion it is possible that in some cases the proposed amount of pens are never reached. In case the artists takes his pension the series stops.

Thank you. I am planning to ask Pilot about this...

I was comparing two different pens from different kinds:

Nioh 88th anniversary (LE 880 pieces - around 2,000usd) and Goldfish Emperor (around 10,000usd not limited but small production).

For the Nioh, I cannot notice any difference rather than the gold sparkle (or so called fun maki-e, if I am not wrong)...which I interpret as machines making the screen print of the image and the artist hand made part is sparkling the gold. By no means I am minimizing the work, but I want to learn and understand the difference.

However, when you look at Goldfish, there are very noticeable differences in the drawing...so in this case it looks more obvious that it is handmade from the drawing to the finish. That can also explain the difference in price.

See the photos below (not best quality, sorry):
