Montblanc Permanent Ink Maintenance

I have noticed that pretty much all the montblanc instructions recommend special care for the permanent ink but it refers to a previous version/formula. Can you please explain if the new permanent ink from montblanc requires a similar maintenance e.g. daily use of the fountain pen ? Is the new permanent ink also pigment based ? I am using the permanent black in my MB heritage 1912. Thanks for your help.

I suspect that the new MB Permanent black uses the same cellulose reactive dyes that Noodler's and Private Reserve do, so if you treat bulletproof inks with extra care than you maybe should do the same with the MB Permanent inks (I don't bother, because I don't think it's really a problem, but I know others feel differently).

MB permanent inks (at the moment the Black and the Blue) have little instruction leaflets at the bottom of the box (inside) just like the other MB inks do. For both these 2 new inks and the previous inks, they say that you should clean your pen approximately every 3 months. That was stressed for the iron-gall blue-blacks. Here, it says that especially for these permanent inks, the pens should be cleaned regularly [my underlining] because the high solids content of the ink can lead to deposits forming in the feed system. That was not pointed out for the other inks.

FWIW, these 2 inks, just like all previous MB inks still have a "best before date" on a label on the box which amounts to 5 years after manufacture/distribution of the ink specimen.

Thanks for this Mike and WirsPlm. So essentially I just need to clean it every three months? I am receiving different opinions from one of the shops I regularly buy. They say that if I don't use the pen often it would be a problem - so it should be used almost daily. Any comment on this ?

That isn't a bad idea at all. Thus some people fill but never use their pen with such an MB ink in it and then think that a wash every 3 months should do the job.

Seriously, if you use any pen filled with any MB inks -- or for that matter, any inks -- and then write with it in any fashion, the feed and nib will be trained to "get along with that ink". Othwerwise, we all expect a form of mummy-ization.
