Teal Tempest Muse - Demonstrator

Scriptorium Pens

Recommended Posts

I finished up this latest pen yesterday. It's a medium-sized Muse (14mm cap to barrel threads) in the popular Teal Tempest acrylic from Exotic Blanks. This one is fitted with a Black Titanium clip and a Black Ruthenium nib.

Love the color. And it's translucent?

Yep! It takes a lot of internal sanding, but the light blue material is transparent. The swirls of white and darker blue are mostly opaque. Here's a close-up of the barrel resting on top of a book. You can see the text through the pen barrel. :D

Beautiful pen, Renée -- you hard work sanding the internal bore paid off big-time.

Did you use sandpaper wrapped around a dowel? A neighbor who hunts gave me some of the abrasive cloth he uses to clean the bore of his rifle and a metal rod with an eye (kind of like a massively oversized sewing needle) to push a corner of the cloth into. It works pretty well, but I don't know if they have the really fine grit needed to get this kind of result.

Thanks! I wrap wet/dry sandpaper around the butt end of a long drill bit. I just cut the sheet longer than the barrel and hold onto the end that sticks out. Nothing fancy. Depending on how the inside looks after drilling, I may start with 320 or 400 grit, then move on up the levels to 2000, then a bit of micro mesh for good measure. It kills my elbow doing all that sanding, but it pays off.

Well, it works ... something that might help -- this Transfer Punch Set from HarborFreight, at $10 I think it's worth it just so you don't end up holding onto drill bit flutes (which ought to be sharp!) Lots of different diameters, and they come in handy for all sorts of things. (I also use them to disassemble kit pens that have gone wrong.)

And I know what you mean about your elbow from sanding & polishing all 8 facets on my octagonal pen :D

Now that does look handy. I wrap tape around the drill bit now. Thanks for the tip!

I also love the photo with the writing that shows through the body. A nice touch and a great pen.

It looks awesome! I'm thinking of a version with white swirls since most inks tend to be dark. Then it'll look like the ink is giving off smoke! :P
