that's a press fit filler.

can you pls take a good picture with the knob fully tightened down? The situation will be more clear then.

Thanks for quick replys, yes it does look like a press fit filler but should not this fit below the gold band, not above it, just turned computer off I will upload a pic with the knop fully down later.

Yes, the press-fit filler isn't pressed in completely. Has the pen been serviced recently? It might be a good idea to get someone like Maxpens to have a look at it.

You are right mikeg, looks the friction fit housing was reinstalled with its collar axially not in contact with the barrel.

The housing should be pressed in deeper, looks the GP ring was not well centered over the housing collar

Take care though !

First the GP ring should be mounted over the housing collar, so could be you have to press the housing back out a few tenths of a millimeter to get the ring free.

Ok, your pen has an unusual press fit connector or atleast the threaded part for the knob is aftermarket.

It appears to be either third party remanufactured part or a part shoe horned from some other model.

The press fit connector is tough to remove and often will break. someone has salvaged the pen. Use as is.

Ok thanks Hari that's what's I was suspecting but was hoping that was not the case as it's always nice to keep (or put back to original) pens, in this case I will probably leave alone for a bit as I did not pay a lot for it.

The portion standing proud of the ring, is it thicker than the ring itself? I am not able to determine that from the pics.. if it is slightly thinner, then it is possible that what Fountainbel suggests has happened. Also is the ring loose or tight?

Here is a picture belonging to Tom Westerich, the central pic shows the press fit filler:

post-41068-0-16345000-1384879376.jpgIt does look like it's a friction fit that has been assembled with the ring on the barrel first, the plastic is quiet brittle as all I did was touch it with a thin dentist tool to see if there was any play and a bit broke off (see picture), everything is tight.

The last picture clearly shows the rounded edge of the gold plated ring is at the filling knob side, while the rounded edge should be at the barrel side

The ring features a stepped bore,on which the larger diameter step fits over the collar of the piston housing

It looks the GP ring was inversely installed, leaving the housing collar on top the ring.

That makes sense. Perfect explanation, I'd say.

So, it's a rectifiable situation - in the hands of an expert.

Or, seemingly, perfectly usable as it is. Nice pen, too.

Enjoy.

The pen was wrongly repaired

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Turned the ring around (as fountainbel had indicated this was round the wrong way) and put back together, picture's attached.
