Unable To Refill Cartier Fountain Pen

Hello,

i have just inherited a Cartier Fountain pen from my grandfather. I really do not know anything about it. i have been writing with fountain pens for almost 10 years, but i am completely stumped on refilling this pen. The pen is old, and has not been used in many years if not decades. Any help or information about this pen would be greatly appreciated! i have attached some photos of the pen. i suspect that refilling this pen has something to do with this pump action like thing at the bottom (opposite side from the nib) of the pen.

Thank you!

i am guessing it needs to filled like a lighter...i.e pour ink directly into it using a eyedropper or a syringe.

e.g the rotring isograph pens have special ink bottles to pour ink directly intk the pen . maybe cartier did the same to ensure people bought ink from them only for their fountain pens and maybe also for convenience...no messy ink bottles when you are travelling.

but before doing that you may want to the leave the pen in water over night and then flush out any gunk or old ink before putting n new ink.

Do NOT fill it with a syringe!.....yet.

This pen is the Cartier Vendome. The section rotates so that you may line it up horizontally or vertically, depending on your writing preference.

This pen is a cartridge filler. To get to the cartridge, open the distal end of the pen (the little door) and pull the end of the pen out (it will likely come out a just a little bit). Once the end is out, you can gently, but firmly, pull out the innards of the pen (which is, basically, one, giant carriage for the cartridge), and that holds the proprietary cartridge. Hopefully, there will be an empty cartridge in the pen. Using a syringe, you can fill that, re-install it, and write away.

The suggestion to soak the pen is good; an ultrasonic bath for the nib/section would be better.

Hope that helps.

Tim

No problem. A client sent me one of these not too long ago (I'm still working on it) and It took me quite a bit of research to figure it out in the first place. It's not a common pen, but it is quite interesting.

Just to add a little more info: If your pen does not have a cartridge in it, you can still get cartridges that fit into the sliding tray. The proprietary cartridges - in blue and black - are still available from Cartier stores, but they are relatively expensive.

Timgirdler is spot on about the nib. The pen, when new, came packaged with a plastic disk that fit over the nib to turn it to your preferred setting without touching the nib with your fingers.

Also, I hope you figured out the clip mechanism. If you push down on the top of the cap, like a ballpoint, the clip pushes away from the cap so you can clip it on a shirt pocket. A clever little design.
