Bilbo's Desk

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, but it seemed better than the others.

Did you happen to notice the desk at which Bilbo, and later Frodo, write their books? With that steep slant it seems like it could be the perfect desk for writing with fountain pens. Here's a picture of Peter Jackson sitting at it.

Does anyone know where I can get something like that? I don't care if it's an exact reproduction -- I'm less interested in LOTR than in a really good writing desk, and I've never seen one like that.

Thanks.

There are slanting desks like that around. But I've never seen one that big or with such a steep slant before. That looks like 35-40 degrees there. Most that I've seen are much shallower.

I know -- that's what I like about it!

There's something called a Captain's Davenport desk, which looks like it has a good slope, but not enough leg room to allow you to get close enough to the paper.

Do you have a local woodworking store? I could go by my local store, talk to the owners, and they would give me a few names of local furniture makers who do custom work. The hobbit desk appears to be fairly simple; most any woodworker could make it. The Captain's Davenport Desk is much more ornate. It would either take a very skilled furniture maker or it could be simplified. I am amazed at how little these craftsmen charge for custom work. Often their pieces are less expensive—and better made—than anything you buy in a furniture store.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

Some people wrote standing up. I think William James write most of his monumental "Psychology" standing up. He would pace the room, conceive the perfect sentence, then walk to the desk and write it. Thus, not much need for leg-room...at least not under the desk.

I would just like to find a handmade desk that is not that presswood garbage from the World. I'd like to spend less that $1000 delivered. I don't care about a slant because it would also hold a laptop and a typewriter along with all the other stuff I need while I'm going to school. I live in Cleveland Ohio so if anyone knows of any place near or far that can make something for me. I don't want something plain jane but I also don't expect something stupid ornate. I could spend upwards of $2000 if the desk was incredible and they could build it inside my house that will also allow me to unassemble if I move as well.

Before you judge someone walk a mile in their shoes. Then if you still judge them you will have a headstart and they will be barefoot.

I'm sure your local Hobbit craftsman could make you one...

Honestly, I'd love one too!
