Noodler's Ink?

Today I would like to discuss Noodler's ink.

 

We seem to get mixed feedback on Noodler's ink, so I would like to get all your opinions on it...

 

Would you use it in your favourite fountain pen?

If yes or no, why?

 

What's your favourite colour or mode eg. eel, bulletproof etc?

 

Have you had any complications with a colour or colours?

 

Does it agree or disagree with your pen or pens?

I love Noodlers ink. Especially the bulletproof inks. My favourites are Rome is Burning and Black Swan Australian Roses, which sadly you do not sell. I've only had trouble with Borealis Black, which would not write in any pen. All the others are great. I wouldn't use them in a vintage pen (besides my Parker 51), as I'm worried about it clogging the feeds, but I'd use them in any modern pen.

Noodler's is in my favorite pens. In fact, the lion's share of ink I have and use is now noodler's.

 

I tend to prefer "Legal Lapis" and "Old Manhattan Black"

 

Legal Lapis is a blue black ink the exact same color I see in my grandfather's WWII journals.

 

Old Manhattan Black is the blackest ink I've found. And I've tried 30-40 blacks.

 

The only issue I've ever had: nib creep, which is only a bit irritating.

Couldn't do without Black Swan in Australian Roses, Galileo Manuscript Brown, and Gruen Cactus. And the highliter inks are nice.

I am a fan of Gruen Cactus eel, Baystate Concord Grape, and Baystate Blue, Dark Matter, and Dragon's Napalm.

I love Noodler's. Yes I would (and do) use it in my favorite pen(s). I have had complications with some of it, as sometimes it dries out on the nib and makes pens hard to start. However, I don't find this a huge obstacle, and Noodler's just makes some of the BEST colors! El Lawrence is one of my very favorites, as is Navy, and now 54th Mass. Like any ink, it can be "differently" suited to a certain pen. Sometimes, (in my experience) a pen will or will not like a particular ink, or a certain ink or color is a better match for a pen/nib. I have more than 10 bottles of Noodler's, and I think it's fantastic, yet sadly much maligned ink.

My ink of the month is Air Corps Blue-Black which is also likely to be my permanent daily ink. Red-Black is also a big favorite.

I use two Noodler's regularly. Violet Vote, a Pendemonium exclusive, and Eel Blue. I've had them both in some nice pens with no problems. VV is in my daily user and has been for at least two years. Yes, I trust both of these inks in my best pens (Pelikans). I probably would avoid some Noodler's inks based on various properties but not based on reports I've heard. VV is a bulletproof but one of the best behaved inks I've ever used.

 

I've used other Noodler's inks and my only complaint has been the saturation. Something a little dilution takes care of quite easily. But they've never created a problem. Just require more regular cleaning. IMO

 

I Think if they are not too hard to get for your line up, they are a worthwhile product to have on the shelf. The first bit can be a challenge. At least it has been in the past for overseas sellers.

I love Noodler's inks. They are my favorites.

 

I own a few other brands, mostly because I discovered a limitation in Noodler's black. It seems a bit too thick to allow bubbles to rise from the feed when I write with a vacuum filler.

 

Baystate Blue is another favorite, Dragon's Napalm is my correcting color, Saguaro Wine is an attractive color, and Apache Sunset has beautiful shading. I also enjoy Gruene Cactus, Rattler Eel Red, and Rome Burning.

 

There are a few less pleasant Noodler's inks. I don't like Periwinkle blue.

I've found them to be hit or miss. Some are excellent, others not so much.

 

- the bullet proof inks

Black - yeah, its only black, but it is one of the best behaved inks I have. 100% bulletproof, doesn't feather or bleed. Surprisingly, it also seems to resist clogging. I can't say the same for my other bulletproof inks.

#41 classic - Very dependent on the pen. Does best in a Fine wet pen. It needs to be wet to bring out the brown and not look so drab. It needs a Fine nib or it feathers badly. tends to clog.

Bad Belted Kingfisher - not very water proof, most of the blue washes away. Feathers and tends to clog. Just a little more blue than Midnight Blue.

Liberty's Elysium - Very vivid blue, partially bulletproof. I have not had any clogging or feathering issues. Tends to leave dry crusty bits around the mouth of the bottle that gets all over when uncapping.

 

- the others

Midnight Blue - my very first bottle. Very well behaved. In a dry pen it is a drab bluish grey. A wet pen brings out more of the blue.

Burgundy - Another very well behaved. Color is a little more pinkish than I as hoping it would be.

Brown - just slightly less waterproof than #41. Much drier, doesn't tend to feather or bleed, but doesn't flow very well either. tends to clog.

Purple Heart. A nice conservative purple. A bit dry. tends to clog.

 

Based on purely practical consideration, Black wins hands down. Liberty's Elysium, Midnight Blue, and Purple Heart are also very nice.

 

Overall, unless you really need the bullet proof properties, the normal line are much better behaved and tend to have better colors.

The inks that need to be in my colection from Nooodlers are Navy and Black Swan in Australian Roses.

 

I dont Know why, but the black swan in Australian Roses just really hit me as a "perfect" color. at least for me. I enjoy the slight variation in color from navy and it is not just a plain blue.

Sac-filler pens (Parker and Esterbrook) seem to write wetter with Pelikan Royal Blue,

Private Reserve DC Supershow Blue, and Quink. Noodler's Eel Blue is okay, too. However,

I use Noodler's Eel Blue in all other pens -- cartridge/cartridge converter, and especially

piston-fillers. One bottle newly opened, and two in reserve.

 

I have an unrestored Parker Duofold Jr. that I use for dipping into Noodler's Polar Black.

Great ink for addressing envelopes and packages.

 

Noodler's ink is great stuff. Sorry for being so boring about color choices.

I use Noodler's very heavily. Only a few inks have proven troublesome to me. Baystate Blue, La Reine Mauve, and Bad Blue Heron are eccentric inks that can cause trouble if you aren't careful, but they have their fans nonetheless.

 

Noodler's Black and Noodler's Blue (and Eel Blue) are mainstays, and Noodler's Red is just as good if red is what you need.

 

In the more exotic colors, Noodler's Navy and Black Swan In Australian Roses are dark-but-vibrant shading wonders, and "permanent" too.

 

If you want an ink that will leave after-images when you look away from the page, I'd suggest Cactus Fruit. It's impossible to overlook something written in this color.

I'll toss this out. For some reason, Noodler's products just don't seem to do much for me.

 

Based on my admittedly limited experience with inks, I have found other inks that do almost everything better for what I do. However, Noodler's is still pretty much the undisputed king of on-page toughness.

 

Got Polar Blue because, well, I admit, I can be forgetful with pens in the winter. Discovered it freezes in the not-so-cold double digits (teens) negative F temps. Didn't seem to like being frozen.

 

Got a new bottle of Bad Belted Kingfisher and still trying to figure out what the small masses that look like undissolved dye are.

 

Had a bottle of the blue that shall not be named.

 

Have a bottle of luxury blue that while looks interesting in the bottle, is not so interesting dried on the page.

 

A bottle of Old Manhattan Black is en route. Will have to see how that one does.

No restrictions on use except that the ink and pen are happy together.

 

Current favorites are AU Roses, Zhivago, Ottoman Azure, Red-Black, and lately Purple Martin is working its way up the list.

I have about half a dozen bottles of Noodler's inks and love them all.

No problems with any yet, but I must admit, I haven't yet put any of my Noodler's inks into some of my vintage pens.

This is based on some comments I have read on this forum, though some forumites do use these inks in some very expensive pens without concern.

I *LOVE* Noodler's ink- at least the ones I have in my small collection.

 

My absolute fav color is Ottman Azure (slightly diluted... ink:H2O=4:1) that is always in my fav pen, Lamy Safari. I also have/ use Bad Blue Helon a lot. That, too, is permanently in my Noodler's Nib Creaper. I initially thought I'd use BBH just to address envelopes, but I like the color so much that I seem to keep using it for practically everything.

 

I don't really have that many pens yet (especially the high end ones anyway) but no problems so far.

I'm getting rid of my Noodlers except for KTC and Aircorp Blue. Too many inks now that I will not use and Noodlers seems to be the one I use less of. IG inks, Montblanc and Visconti have the color and characteristics I prefer.

I have over 40 flavours of Noodler's

 

1) used with favourite pens? All the time!!!

 

2) favourite colours? so many, Noodler's is amongst the top for all shades, BSB stands out the best amongst the competition

 

3) Complications? BSB with staining and clogging, Periwinkle and Blue on the Plains of Abraham with dye separation (???)
