A List Of Chinese Pen Brands

Seele

Recommended Posts

As someone whose primary interest is Chinese-made pens - a somewhat arbitrary decision before jumping in at the deep end - I picked up a fair bit of information through my strolls through this internet thing! One of the first things I noticed is that there have been many more brands in that country than what most people realized; at one point in Shanghai only, there were no fewer than 76 individual fountain pen manufacturers. So I started a list of brands a little while ago: it is nowhere near exhaustive as long-forgotten makers and brands keep turning up, not to mention new ones.

Of course, most of the information are from seeing actual examples in my own meagre collection, and even in photographs only. This does not always indicate much beyond the country of origin and the brand name on the pen itself, this explains why so many of them have scant information. Without further ado here it is.

How much of these are actual factories? Is it possible that some of these are just names for a line of pens from a factory rather than separate brands?

suexilin,

Thanks for your appreciation, it's just some of my nerdiness showing, if nothing else. I actually do not really plan to maintain this list, but just as something I let out to the wild and allow it to take on a life of its own.

basterma,

As I stated it is a list of brands, not factories, and indeed many factories used multiple brands. I would estimate that there must have been between two and three hundred individual pen manufacturers within China over the years, some went under, some got amalgamated, and since the 1990s or thereabout, plenty of them popped up and many went under just as quickly.

It is also possible that some of the brands were short-run private labels as well, but without much information at my disposal it is way beyond my ability to check.

The lack of interest in studying their own industries among Chinese collectors is intriguing, the small discoveries I made when examining secondary sources were considered major achievements there. When all is said and done, it leaves an opportunity for me to look into what are basically witnesses to a substantial industry, and that is, to me, quite a bit more interesting than acquiring the next "big name" item for the sake of the "big name".

No, I am not going to list my pens here.

I will update this with my pens as they work through my rotation as I have quite a few ones from smaller brands.

It would really help us if a member fluent in Chinese could help read the pictures we post. Many pens just have Chinese branding on the converter or barrel. We also need to find out if some factories bought the nibs from Hero or others like brands buy from Jowo or Schmidt.

Thanks for starting the list.

basterma,

You have just mentioned one of the trickiest aspects in the compilation of a list like this.

Very often the Chinese makers switch between different versions of their names rendered in Latin alphabets. For example, "Jinxing" was a relatively late rendition of the brand name where "Golden Star" and "Kin Sin" were more commonly used, and the latest incarnations of the gold-nibbed Type 28 were actually marked "Gold Star" instead.

Guanleming is another example: the firm was established in NYC and most likely under the name "Wm. K. Rockman Inc", but its name in Chinese was totally different. After its move to Shanghai, and after the war, the Chinese habit was to ignore its English name altogether, and render the Chinese name in Pinyin; therefore the firm never wanted to be known as "Guanleming" but somehow they found themselves under that name.

The problem is further compounded when a pen is found with only Chinese or English markings, or none of the known packaging materials show both together. In the former situation what I could do was to convert the Chinese name into Pinyin, even though it may or may not be identified as such. For example, one brand which was active prior to the mid 1950s and then inherited by the First Shanghai Ballpoint Pen Factory was "Vens", some examples are often found on eBay too. If I only look at the name "Vens" and try to look for its Chinese name I would draw a blank; but I would be in the exact same predicament if I knew the Chinese name and then look for its English name. It was the discovery of a picture of a retailer's pack featuring both names, and the FSBPF markings, which positively identifed it.

Nice list, and something I was wondering about. The length of the list surprises me. In a communist country I just didn't expect so many businesses.

I own a Crocodile and one not on your list, a Huashilai.

They're both attractive pens. The Crocodile took a few weeks to get writing, and some of the gold color flaked off the nib, but it does now write nicely. The Huashilai looks expensive and feels expensive, but the writing doesn't thrill me.

Proud resident of the least visited state in the nation!

basterma,

I can read Chinese and type in Traditional Chinese rather than Simplified Chinese as used in mainland China. I will see what I can do.

By the way I also just found that Lingnan is often marked "Lily" as well.

Waski_the_Squirrel,

The Crocodile brand is active now but I cannot tell if it is the same as one which was active a little while ago. I am also aware of Huashilai, it is one of the plethora of newer startup brands whose quality can vary enormously.

What about Kaigelu, the Chinese pen with the kangaroo as its brand mark? I didn't see it listed. Today I was using their 368 model, an impressively smooth writer.

Not to nitpick, but it seems that although you've mentioned Hero several times in this rather exhaustive list, you forgot to actually include an entry for the brand

Bookworm is a brand name used by Yiren.

I too had noticed the omission of Kaigelu.

I have seen a Guang Ming - it was rubbish!

There is a 'Leonardo' Brand too.

Richard.

I wonder if this list could be pinned somewhere...

  • 2 months later...

Agree with Mint. Hero 英雄 is one of major brands in China. One thing I need to say, about twenty years ago, there iare some small fountain pen manufactories had produced some ffine quality pen by using German nibs without brand name and logo. I got one many years ago as a gift from my friend. I can read/write chinese.

@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference

Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.

Super excited to go check out the PDX Pen Bazaar today. I volunteered to help set up tables. It should be super fun, followed by Xmas tree shopping. 😁

lantanagal, I’ve only seen that happen when you put someone on the ignore list. I doubt a friend would do that.

Fine-have you had a nibmeister look at it?
    • carlos.q 29 Oct 15:19
@FineFinerFinest: have you seen this thread? https://www.fountainpennetwor...nging-pelikan-nibs/#comments
    • FineFinerFinest 24 Oct 8:52
No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27
I've had a Pelikan M805 for a couple of years now and cannot get the nib to write without singing. I've worked on dozens of nibs with great success. Ny suggestion about what's going wrong? 😑

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! I'm looking to repair some cheap pens that are starving for ink yet filled, and eventually get new nibs; and development of repair skills (an even longer learning curve than my art studies - lol). Every hobby needs a hobby, eh ...

Perhaps it's like saying Beetlejuice 3 times to get that person to appear, though with @Sailor Kenshin you only have to say it twice?

@Seney724. The pen was recently disassembled and cleaned, but the nib and feed were not properly inserted into the holder. I'm in Maryland.
    • Diablo 26 Aug 21:32
@Seney724. The nib section needs to be adjusted properly.

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...
    • OldFatDog 26 July 19:41
I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄
    • RegDiggins 23 July 12:40
Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen

    • T.D. Rabbit 15 July 12:45
