Cracked Pens...

Hi,

I have experienced that two of my FPs (both Watermans) have cracked in the area where you place your fingers while writing (not sure if there is a specific term for this). One was an Expert II pen (in which I only used a waterman converter) and the other an Ici Et La (for normal cartridges and not the mini ones).

I'm wondering what the best thing to do would be? I bought the pens about 2 and 7 years ago. Is it possible to send them to the waterman company and have them fixed there (despite it being such a long time ago since I bought one of them)? Or would it be better to send them elsewhere to have them fixed? I'm also wondering if this is something than easily can be fixed?

Hi,

I had the same thing happen to my beloved Ici et Là very recently. Waterman replaced my grip section for free, and I received my new grip section a week ago. Send them an email and see what they can do. Out of curiosity, where did yours get cracked? Mine got cracked in two places on the grip section lip, each crack corresponding to each edge of the steel nib. It's all very odd, and I'm quite light handed, and I don't think pressure from my hand caused it to crack. I think it was just stress from the edge of the nib and plastic getting brittle from age. It was such a pity though since I use the pen a lot. It's one of my favorite writers.

Here is a picture of mine. At this point, I had the cracks already, but I didn't know that they were what was causing me to get inky fingers every time I used my pen. I also had an internal crack inside the grip section that made the converter I used get ink all over the part that is covered inside the grip section.

Thank you for your prompt reply!:) Wow, that is excellent customer service. I'm curious: for how long had you used it before the crack happened? I'm just worried that the three year guarantee will prevent them from fixing it for me.

Unfortunately I don't have my pen here right now, as I'm visiting my family, but I will have a look once I get back. Mine only cracked in one place, but not quite sure how it was placed in relation to the nib.

Happy to meet a fellow Ici Et La fan. It's one of my favourite writers as well, and it also happens to be the pen that made me fall in love with fountain pens.

Edit: I do remember the crack happened at the outermost part of the grip section, i.e. where the grip section meets the nib.

Edit: Lovely colour! I've been considering buying an extra Ici Et La in that exact colour (the one I own is purple). I hope you are happy with your pen now that it's been fixed:)

Hi,

I've had it since November 2005. It somehow got the two cracks fairly recently. I'm not sure exactly when though. I got my Ici et Là when it first came out in turquoise. I saw it and just had to have it. I had a friend get it for me overseas since they didn't sell it in the states yet. I also really loved the purple color, but I never got one in that color. I think it's too bad they discontinued it as it was one of my favorite modern Waterman pens. They are now so hard to find. I had two modern Waterman pens that I liked, the Audace and the Ici et Là.

A model we see but hear little about. I have the BP version shown in a 2001 catalogue...but they surely look like RB's

Yes, it's a lovely pen. It's perfect for my hands seeing that it's such a small and light pen. Pretty-looking too. I wonder why they discontinued it?

Indeed! I never knew they had a BP version too. Are they using standard refills?

Yes, it states 'also available with a roller refill'. I assume they mean they will accept a RB refill. I thought capped pens were Roller Balls anyway. In short it's a dual version pen.

Also found this in a German catalogue.

Is it known why this was advertised as a ladies pen?

Is it very small?? It looks similar in form to the Carène (that is capped, nib is totally different, of course)

As someone with small hands, I found that the Waterman Ici et Là fits my hand very well. It's a good size for me and is a lot smaller than many of the other Waterman pens I have seen. I also like the lighter weight. I think it's one of my favorites because of its size and weight and the way it writes.

How does the Ici-et-la compare to the Charleston in size??

Quite a bit smaller. The pen is much slimmer as well, and the pen is shorter than the Charleston. The grip is thinner as well. The Charleston isn't as comfortable for me to use since it is slightly larger.

Ooh, that's real small. From your description it would be about the size of a CS Dinky

Could someone provide a pic with, say, the Ici-et-La and the Carene for comparison?

Thanks

Hi,

I don't have a Carène, but I can take pictures of it next to a few other pens. It's definitely longer than a Dinkie, but I think the grip section at its thinnest point is thinner.

As you can see, it is quite slender. It is not a very long pen, but it is long enough to accommodate a converter or long cartridges. The grip section is also quite slender in comparison to the other pens. It is as narrow as the grip section on one of the Montblanc Diva line pens.
