Montblanc 234 1/2 ?

Hello,

Found this pen advertised as an mb 234 1/2, and the end cap also tells the same.

I always thought that the 234 had an removable telescopic piston as an upgrade to the 334 that has an friction fit "normal" piston fitted.

Would this be an 334 with an 234 cap? Or did there exist 234 without a telescopic piston?

Any thoughts?

see the link here.

Best wishes and a merry christmas to everyone!

Hi Crabe919,

Whilst you wait for an answer from someone more qualified than myself, for what it is worth, I have a few pens from the period in question, including two of the early 234 1/2s and 2 of the later 'Luxury' versions. I also have a 334 and two of the 334 1/2s.

The pen in your link looks like a Luxury version (missing the 'Meisterstuck' cap band which goes with that Meisterstuck clip of course). My understanding is that it was these later Luxury models that had the upgraded piston. Hope this helps

All the best over the festive period.

Pavoni.

I'm certainly no expert. This link here may provide some info. (scanned pdf of 1956 repair manual courtesy of Tom Westerich, also linked to from a pinned thread).

Seasons greetings

This looks like a screw-in piston http://hepworthdixon.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/1940s-montblanc-234-12-fountain-pen.html

You don't know what you need until you realise you haven't got it.

I have an 234 1/2 and a 334 1/2 myself, the 234 has the "separate" telescopic piston where the 334 has a fixed non telescopic one.

I was just wondering if there are 234 without the separate piston system, or this is a cap from a 234 onto a 334.

Thanks for the replies.

Someone else with some insight?

Adam

FWIW, my 234 1/2 is a button filler and looks very much like the one pictured in the eBay auction (except it has a cap band, tho' a single one; I think they should have double cap bands, if memory serves...). Based on Pavoni's picture, it looks like pre-1950's 234's had telescopic pistons while the later ones had different filling systems, so the eBay pen might be OK.

Pavoni,

Thanks for the pictures, speaks 1000 words.

Apparantly there are different 234 1/2 models.

That's what i've wanted to know.

I wasn't interested in the ebay pen but wanted to know if there was a mix up or if there where differences in the 234 1/2 range.

Jls1, thanks

regards,

Adam
