Where can I get a good pen box thing? are there better ways to store pens? I am a new collector and I am very interested in learning what everyone does in terms of storage...

I found a wonderful box that holds 20 pens out on Ebay for $40 or so. It came from California and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it actually was. A lot of folks here use zip up pen holders, Goulet has some of those. And some folks use the roll up canvas pen holders (I may well get one of these).

On the far end of the scale folks are using some of the wooden hobby boxes from folks like Gerstner.

All fun!

TC.

What sort of money are you willing to spend? How much is your collection worth? How many pens do you have?

If you can give us a few pointers on your collection we might be able to assist.

I am very new, I have 2 pens and I might be purchasing another soon. (Baoer Skywalker, good, bad, any reviews on this?).

I do not want to spend a lot of money at all, especially since I am just starting and since my collection is not worth much yet.

I am quickly getting addicted, though, so who knows how quickly my collection might grow! hahaha.

I have a mom made wrap made from a cheap dollar store place mat (food, table, plates, etc). It works well but only holds about 7 pens and doesn't cope well with big pens like an Edison Herald Grande or Glenmont. But it works well enough for now.

I'm pondering getting one of those converted Cigar boxes since I feel like it would look really good on a desk :)

I agree with Julio, I'd get a cheap leather 3 pen case.

You can pay > £2,000 for a pen chest which is why I asked my questions. These chests would fit 50 - 100 pens. If you have 50 £600 pens then the chest is cheap when you consider the value of what it holds.

You can get cheapish pen chests on Amazon (or ebay) for various sizes (8 or 10 upwards). If you get a box ensure that it is lined with a material such as felt.

My two rules are, firstly ensure no two pens touch each other - a pen should only touch a fabric. And secondly, the pens are stored horizontally.

Good luck with your quest. It is definitely an addictive pastime.

The best budget solution would be a modified cigar box, which can be bought for 4 usd from ebay. I couln't find one where i live, so i actually built a wooden case using no skills and almost no tools(caveman style).

I later added red casmir-like interior and a specially-designed "pillow" to hold the pens in place. It doesn't have the finish of a factory-made case, but it's beautiful and i love it. I also have the sense of pride for actually creating something that has a practical use. :cloud9:

Actually, i think i`il post a couple of pictures with it, even if i know most of you won`t like it.

If you only have two pens, I strongly second the suggestion to get a simple fabric or leather case. Far less expensive than the wood cases. If you must have wood, probably the best bet is to find a local woodworker. I also would second the strong suggestion that you should only have the pens touching felt or fabric (of some type). For extremely large collections, I have seen and heard of people who have converted china or curio cabinets. For convenience I've listed the manufacturers I've found here:

Fountain Pen Display Case Company: A wide variety of cabinets.

Pen Cases: From the UK, very satisfied users on this forum.

Ray Jones Woodcrafts: From the USA. Handmade, very high-end boxes of hardwood.

Venlo: High-end Italian brand, but I understand the boxes are made in Thailand.

Girologio: I couldn't find the manufacturer, but they are carried by several venders. Here is Richard Binder's Girologio page. (no business relationship other than satisfied customer)

Most pen shops around the country will have one or more of the various models in their showrooms. Vendors at pen show always a couple they are looking to sell. Be advised, wooden cases for pens are pricey and shipping the larger ones can be expensive.

For Leather pen folios, I have and recommend Menash's cases. They are way above and beyond others (and the price reflects it). (no business relationship other than satisfied customer)

Go to a flee market or second hand store and find you a felt lined box or a box you can glue some felt into that has character. Might not have a glass display panel, but it will store the pens nicely. I use a thuya wood box from Morocco.

Hmmm... That's mighty interesting. Since there are so many "pen cases" could you please provide an item number, seller id, or something a bit more unique to help search for it? Thank you.

Modifying your own cigar box is relatively inexpensive, very customizable, and gives your collection room to grow!

For daily carrying at university, I used to use a Nomadic brand pen case, but I now carry a three-pen leather case at work.

(Off topic, but I really like the Baoer Skywalker. It performs admirably, and the looks and experience are comparable to a much more expensive pen. I have a review that I wrote, here.)

Here is mine, a cantilever case that holds ten pens. You pull the front down to gain access to the pens. If I remember correctly it was about forty dollars.

I really like this case! If you don't have the auction number, do you remember what it was called, so I can look for similar items?

I also saw some of those on ebay. Very nice! I almost got them, to tell you the truth. They were called "Museum style" cases, iirc.

What she said. Right now I'm in the process of making my own storage solution, but it's not nearly as elegant as this. For $60 I would buy it in a heartbeat if I could find one.
