Pen Wipe From Akkerman

Recommended Posts

I got this pen wipe from Akkerman in the Hague, and it is so cute. It is made of chamois leather, 3 layers, held together by that little brown leather tab.It is about 3.5" in diameter. It is so nice I am afraid to use it to wipe my pens. I have a microfiber cloth that I normally use. Does anyone else have anything like this? Do you use it?

That's pretty cool, Susanlouise. You should use it!

I have a pen wipe I made that is based on the design of vintage pen wipes; it is made with layers of wool felt, and I do use it. The bottom layer is leather with layers of felt on top. The bird and nest in the middle are just for decoration; Victorian age and earlier pen wipes often had a stuffed animal or other figure sewn on for decoration.

so does one wash these and re-use...(seems unlikely with the felt ones) or just use it up and replace?

The chamois one is very nice (the felt one is very cute too!), I may have to look into one of those the next time I order from Akkerman, are they reasonably priced?

oooh, I could use one of these! I've just been using strips cut off an old silk top that was too tattered to wear anymore, and they're nice and lint-free but pretty ragged looking compared to this! Where can I get my own?

I'm not affiliated with ANY of the brands/retailers/shops/ebay sellers/whatever I mention or recommend. If that ever changes, I will let you know :)

I don't plan to wash mine; felt can be a bit tricky to wash... I don't really see the need as it will be a long time, if ever, before the felt gets too marked up to be used further. I don't know that the chamois ink wipe would need to be washed either, but chamois can be washed in tepid water with a bit of soap so it shouldn't be a problem.

I am assuming you are talking about the chamois cloth pen wipe. You could probably order one from Akkerman's; I was unable to locate it on their site but you might be able to email them about it. Edit: Susan linked the exact page - I was looking under "Accessories" instead of under "Ink and refills." :headsmack: I am thinking it would be very easy to make one - just get a nice chamois cloth from an auto parts store (that is the easiest place to find it here in the USA at least) and cut it up into the size and shape you want, sew it together - maybe sew a "fancy" button on the top layer and sew the layers together; the button will add a little decoration. Seems simple, anyway!

Fantastic! Thanks!

Agreed about the shipping...but no big deal if I get one with my next ink order.

Interesting products. Thank you for sharing.

And BEAUTIFUL inks !!!

I wish they had a US distributor ! :crybaby:

Agreed! I don't see why a company like isellpens or goulet or gumwater can't get them onboard over here. It's not like nobody wants these inks.

Actually they have been contacted (maybe even by the Goulets but I am not positive)...the problem is Akkerman was not interested in having a distributor so it does not appear to be in the cards.

How well would those pen wipes work? As it seems after filling a pen, ink gets on the nib, and the more u wipe off, the more that is drawn back from the feed. :headsmack: also, it would be a shame to eventually be left with a dirty piece of leather if it can't be washed... It is almost too nice for a pen wipe...

Can anyone explain why penwipes are round and layered? I'm kind of befuddled by this and I honestly don't get it.

Considering a whole genuine chamois can be had for about $12 at any auto store, it seems like these could be made pretty easily with, what? A little manual riveter?

lol - I think you can make a pen wipe however you want to, in any shape, with or without layers; it is up to your imagination. The round and layered pen wipes are more "traditional" for vintage pen wipes, but as you can see from this page of images, (some of which seem to have little to do with pen wipes, but...) pen wipes were made in a variety of shapes: Vintage pen wipes - Google images As for the layers, that is "traditional" too; my guess is that it was easy to just slide the pen nib (these were made during the age of the dip pen for the most part) in between the layers, pull it back out for a quick wipe, and then back to writing.

I agree that just buying a nice chamois cloth and making your own pen wipe would be easy, and no doubt cheaper than buying from Akkermann's (the shipping is just a bit much for those of us in the USA.) A fun project, too!

When you place your ink order, ask for it, the change in shipping is insignificant. The wipe is useful. So far, I keep using it just to polish the demonstrator pens, but it could be more useful if I weren't "saving" it. The Akkerman inks are really nice and the bottles are wonderful. I have samples if you want to chose a color before you buy.
