Big Ben pens.

Hi,

 

Working on the Pen Brands World Wide List, I will find brand names of pens I also have in my own collection. Most of the time I can find additional data on those brands in my reference books or on the internet, but sometimes there is very little or no info available. (my collection of reference books is limited.. , Lambrou, Martini, Bowen, Steinberg,... and I just ordered a second hand copy of the Delano book, maybe that helps).

 

So now I am stuck with this Big Ben pen.

I found it on the Dutch Tilburg Penshow in september last year. I think it is Danish, but I am not sure. Tried to google more info on this brand but got only references to do-it-yourself-home-made-wooden-fountainpen-kits. Yuk!

 

My Big Ben is 13,5 cm long capped, 14,5 cm posted, black plastic, 14k f/m nib, nib engraved with: BigBen / 14k585 / 43. The slip on cap is gold filled or gold plated, with only the name Big Ben engraved in it. See details in the picture for the disign. There is an engraving in the Barrel that says: 1915-13-10-1955. This indicates IMO a 40 year jubilee of some sort, of the original owner, but it indicates as well that the pen is probably manufactured shortly before that date, so 1953-1955.

Lex Villines is a very nice guy who posts there frequently posts there. According to this article he interested in Big Ben pens.

I wrote Lex Villines and he answered me promply. Not only could he confirm my idea of the pen being Danish, and from the 50's, but he also established another contact for me with a fellow fountain pen lover I happen to know already! He is an expert on Danish pens. I happened to have an email correspondence with him a few years ago. But I lost this persons (e-mail)address, thanks to a PC crash.

I'll send you a PM with the details. I hope you'll find it nice to read about how small the world can be, especially that of FP lovers!.

How are Big-Ben pens compared to Penol? If one has budget of buying just one of them, which one should one go for first?

Remember that some Big Ben pens were also made by Wyvern to further confuse matters.

Not to confuse matters further, but there is also a Dainish smoking pipe manufacturer named Big Ben. I have two of their pipes and I think they are excellent. If their pens are even nearly as well-rendered, they would be well worth hanging on to.

The Big Ben fountain pens were sold from a company named:

Benzon Trading Company.

 

As can be seen from this slip, they sold the Big Ben pens.

 

I can see others are far deeper into this company. I just thought the slip might be interesting.

I spoke to a Danish pen dealer at the London Pen Show and he said a lot of the Big Ben pens were manufactured in Germany but had British patent numbers on them as there was considerable resistance to buying German products at the time.

Here are some danish Big Ben pens, from the left side is a Miller royal followed by 7 Big Bens,a danish Avo pen, another Big Ben (pink) followed by four danish Hoover pens and finally three danish Penol pens.
