Lamy Or Sheaffer

rockerxs

Recommended Posts

I had ordered a Lamy Safari which didnt make it to the shipping for a week and then i receieved an email from the store that it would take another week or so before it gets shipped then a week or so to get delivered. So i ended up cancelling the order.

Well i now have a choice between buying a Lamy Safari and a Sheaffer VFM.

Which one would you guys recommend for writing exams (requiring really fast writing on sort of low grade paper)

or any other recommended within the same price range.

Thank You :D

PS I have a Parker Frontier Steel at present.

never tried the Sheaffer but the Safari feed seems well suited to fast writing.

You mean PFM? If that is the case, the Sheaffer is superior. Otherwise, I'd get the Lamy.

Using right now:

Jinhao 9019 "EF" nib running Birmingham Railroad Spike, Waldmann Tango "F" nib running Pelikan Königsblau

Sheaffer Crest "F" nib running Narwhal Carmel Sea Blue, Sailor Cylint "M" nib running J. Herbin Caroube de Chipre,

Gioia Alleria "F" nib running Colorverse CAT Glistening

Definitely the safari. They are very reliable pens.I have two safaris and both were perfect out of the box. I have had a look at the Vfm that I found in local stationary store. Long story short I was not very impressed with the quality of the finishing. Also, according to the fountain pen geeks review of the vfm it does not accept a converter should you want to go down that route.

As for writing on bad paper, I would either go a fine or extra-fine nib. Many people will tell you that the nibs run wider than the competition and make it seem as if an extra fine will be equivalent to writing with a sharpie. I don't find this to be the case; my EF safari puts out around a 0.4mm line, and it's quite a wet nib, YMMV.Keep in mind that although the EF will put down a thinner and quicker drying drying line than the F with the same ink and paper it will also be less smooth to write with which could have an impact upon your writing speed.

As for ink, lamy blue is a good all rounder and dries fairly quickly. Lamy blue-black dries very fast, but is quite a dry ink with no lubrication for the nib. Noodler's bulletproof black is your absolutely best bet for performance on bad paper, it will not feather or bleed.. It provides lots of lubrication but can take a little bit of time to dry. I prefer Caran d'Ache carbon black though, with my broad nibbled Lamy 2000 I have only got slight show through on generic cheap paper, though it is very expensive.

Personally my combination would be a fine nibbed safari (though if you normally write larger you could go with a medium for increased smoothness at the expense of drying time) with Bulletproof Black for the sheer fact that it will perform well on anything. I'm not a fan of Noodler's black for reasons unknown to me, but the usability of it can not be denied.

Good luck with your exams!

John

They're both nice enough for writing. The Lamy cartridge is rather larger than the international short that goes in the VFM, and you can't stow a spare down the VFM's barrel. The possible need to swap a cartridge partway through an exam and the associated rooting through a pocket for the spare are the main marks against the Sheaffer. It's a little more wearable in public, though, and does not have the prescriptive section (but it does have a possibly uncomfortable step at the joint).

There's also relative sizes, depending if you like big or not so big...

The Sheaffer looks like it was made at the jinhua factory.

Do not let old pens lay around in a drawer, get them working and give them to a new fountain pen user.

Looks like a "Pelikan Future" to me.

Good choice.

Now get the converters and start using bottled ink to really enjoy the fountains.

Enjoy your pens

Have a nice day

Just inked them both..

The Lamy is a tad better than the Pelikan being the smoother one..Pelikan feels like it drags a bit

Rest both are awesome

The Pelikan is a funny one-- it certainly LOOKS like a Future, but an odd variation thereon. I don't claim any mastery of modern Pelikan lore, but I'm reasonably sure the Future is P55, the current Pelikano is definitely P480 and the previous was P460. P57?

I think that the Pelikan P57 that rockerxs has looks like a Pelikan 'Style'.

Linky

ETA: which to me seems to be a dressed-up version of the P55 ‘Future’.

I wish that Pelikan still made the Transparent version of the P55!
