Cross Townsend Finishes

Dear Townsedophiles,

There are several reviews already available here for Cross Townsend, so I am not going to reiterate what has already been said. The idea behind this post was to display at one place all the makes and finishes of Townsend for refence. Below are the finishes I could find. If I have missed any (and I am sure I must have) please post or send me a PM.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but are there Medallists with steel nibs? The Medallist I own (second hand) does not have a yellow gold nib. I tried looking online, but the ones I see are all gold nibs.

Lacking is the iridescent green / black stripe finish. Held one way in light, the green stripes appear wider. Held another way, black strips appear wider. I would photograph mine, but it was driven over ...

Medalists come in Gold Coated Steel nibs TTBOMK.

Some may have been sold with gold nibs, but both my medalitss CII and Townsend have GC Steel nibs.

I have a Townsend ballpen and pencil combo with Concorde written on the side of the caps.

Finish seems to be grey lustre. Is this unique to pens sold on concorde and are there other examples out there in different finishes ??

TTBOMK these were special edition Townsends for the flyers in Concord Aircraft by Brit Airways / Air France.

I haven't seen this color, "Meteorite" in a FP, just this USA-made BP model. It's from MontgomeryPens.com.

I have one called "Quicksilver" that appears to be missing from the original post. It sort of looks like a dark, glossy stainless steel. Here is a pic of one like it:

Two further finishes that come to mind are Cyber Blue and Matt Black (Cosmos Black?) Then there are the ones with the chrome caps - some of the range were in the Cross sale - see www.cross.com

I have a gold coloured Townsend, only says Cross USA on the cap, 14k nib, is this likely to be an 10k GF or 23K GF, any way of finding out.

Pensupply2000's question is interesting. I don't believe there is any such thing as a 23K gold-filled pen. (But conceivably there is; it isn't ordinary, though.)

 

Gold-plated, yes, because gold plating can be exceedingly thin. Nor do I have any sense that Cross has manufactured merely gold-plated pens; the gold-colored Cross pens I know about (which may not be the entire universe of Cross pens) are gold-filled or solid gold.

 

At present I own a Century II presumably made in China and marked 1/20 10K, either rolled gold or gold-filled, those being synonymous terms and my eyes being temporarily foggy. The pen definitely states the gold content. I am also aware of Cross pens made of 12K rolled gold and own two, my Century BP and FP. There has been 14K rolled gold and, for all I know, but I've never touched an example, 18K rolled gold. And Cross has made pens of solid 14K gold, not rolled gold. Back in my day, so to speak. Perhaps by now solid 18K gold.

 

I would find it odd that Cross USA made a pen with an all-gold appearance without labeling the gold content, assuming that it was rolled gold or solid gold. The 23K gold plating one may find on clips, cap lips, and the brand-indicative bit at the top of the cap, would not be labeled. That amount of gold would not be worth quantifying.

 

So, yes, I'd say that among pens made in the USA there are more possibilities for Pensupply2000 than 10K rolled gold. Indeed, I'm not sure Cross got as far down as 10K while manufacturing in the United States. Others will know better than I do.

Penssupply2000 you can look up the caps above in the pictures and see the difference in the black band which is a code for the gold content even if it is not marked.Townsend came in 10K and 18K finishes. (I am not sure about an earlier 14K finish but it certainly is not a current issue finish)

 

Century II also came in the same finishes, same cap top black band code.

 

Classic Century was made in solid gold in addition to the above finishes and that is not common, also when found it will be pretty expensive, according to a FPNer who discussed th ematter in another thread, the ballpoint is worth $500-700 and the pen maybe $1200-1500. For other finishes the code remains the same.

I need to supply a correction to my earlier post. The pen was advertised as selling for an original price of $260.00 which would have been the price with an 18k nib (to the best of my knowledge). The website wouldn't allow an online purchase to be completed so I phoned in my order. When the pen arrived it had a plated nib not 18k gold. Cross is sending me a retun shipping label and will refund my money. I'm crushed because the pen was gorgeous. I see them on e-bay beginning at $95 (steel nib). I've become obsessed with finding one with a gold nib at a reasonable price. In the meantime I scored a Midnight Blue from e-bay, new with an advertised 14k nib for $109.00 to ease the pain of the earlier loss. There was an earlier post somewhere in this forum which mentioned that Cross had swapped out some of the gold nibs to save them for repairs and substituted plated ones. I can't verify this, but it seems accurate based on what happened to me. In the meantime, Happy New Year to all. vinper

I just picked up a matching Townsend xf nib fp plus matching Townsend pencil in this champagne meteorite color from crosspenmall for $130.00. Pictures to follow. vinper
