Inexpensive Notebooks For University Notes

I use Staples sustainable earth sugarcane notebooks. They come in a couple of different formats: spiralbound, composition, and legal pad. Very fountain pen friendly and inexpensive especially during sales. I usually stock up when they're on sale for $1.49.

+1 for the Staples Sustainable Earth notebooks. I am starting school in 8 days and tried one out, well, the next day I placed an online order for 5 more. You can't do wrong by going with those sugarcane notebooks. They also make plain binder filler paper and while they didn't really bleed through too terribly much, there was definitely some heavy ghosting on the other side. Seems like the spiral binder versions have a slightly thicker paper. I've tested them with Noodler's Bullet-Proof Black, Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo and Noodler's Antietam with both an Edison Collier Fine nib as well as a Lamy Safari EF nib. No problems at all. Depending on how picky you are, you may or may not decide to write on only 1 side, which I do anyway. If only I could get spiral bound or even cloth bound notebooks with my HP Choice 32lb. laser paper, I'd be a happy man. I just don't like printing my own lined paper since I may need to turn some of these papers into the professors.

The problem with the Staples Bagasse paper pads is the inconsistency; most are perfect but the odd one will be full of bleedy, feathery, awful paper.

I agree. I just tried one of these based on the raves and was amazed at how not good the paper was. Just not good, hated all my FPs except the finest nibs.

Wassup wid that, homes? Looks like you're WANT to feel the hurt. -ethernautrix

Another vote for the Staples Sustaineable Earth spirals.

I started with the letter size one subject spiral for my new journaland sermon notebook,nd love it. The paper is quite smooth, the cover is sturdy, the spiral is sturdy, and they are two dollars cheaper than the popular five star brand five subject notebooks.

I use Maruman, Kokuyo and Clairefontaine for my work notebooks.

I carry them in these (having both large and medium sizes, though the prices have gone up):

I recently bought these to try out:

You could also check out Staples Arc, 1 sectioned notebook for school use, possibly another at home with really big rings for storing until not needed. I have one for handwriting information that uses the 3" rings. They also have a nice 3x5 index card holder that you can get if you use them. Levenger has compatible pieces that Arc doesn't have and an Ebay outlet:

For cheapest go to a Staples like store and get #24 or #28 when its on sale (there is always a sale somewhere) and then use a printer to put the lines you want on it and get a cheap binder:

A little late for this semester, but here we go:

Ordered by my preference:

  1. Levenger branded Rhodia Annotation Ruled paper in a Circa/Staples Arc system Notebook
  2. An FP friendly paper with annotation ruled/grid paper punched for a Circa/Staples Arc system notebook
  3. Staples Arc system"Project Planner" paper in an Arc System Notebook
  4. Rhodia or ClairfontaineNotebooks (I like the top spiral bound -- I am a lefty)

the_consortium on eBay UK is selling 5-packs of Oxford and Black N' Red notebooks at pretty good prices. The Oxfords work out to be £1.50 each including shipping, or less, if you purchase multiple packs. All contain the same 90gsm Optik paper. There are wirebound, casebound and reporter notebooks in A4 or A5.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have had decent luck with five star ring note books. I found that the five star blue lines dont rub off with sweaty hands. Ink seems to behave rather well and I have not found anything that feather on it with my small supply of ink. kiwaguru, sei-boku, south sea blue, and a few samples from caran dache, and 1670.

Wow! how do we locate the comp books on the bottom? i didn't see them on the miquelrius site...

My life is full of mistakes. They're like pebbles that make a good road.

I purchased a couple Cambridge Limited hardback notebooks this semester. They are nice but I think it paper is not the best for fountain pen. It workable but I find pens that lay down a wet line feather somewhat and can easily bleed through the back.

I know many people hate the paper quality of Moleskine notebooks but I have always found it to work great with any pen/ink combo I throw at it.

Rhodas are great but I think the paper might be a little but too smooth/ glossy for my taste.

My favorite paper/notebook I have found so far is the Clairfontaine Seyes/ French ruled. Great quality and SOO fun to write on because of the ruling.

I am confused as to why you say you don't like Rhodia, but love CF. Seeing as they are basically the same brand, but the CF paper is actually smoother.

Sorry I tried to be clear but for me I love the French ruled paper. I didn't know it was the same paper. I feel like the Rhodia is more glossy compared to my CF notebook. Maybe it is just my preference.

The brand is actually clairefontaine-Rhodia. They come from the same paper mill. I just love them both, really make smooth pens even smoother!

For Notebooks I buy the Miguel Ruiz Notebooks. (I see others have already posted links).

In the past I have found them at the campus book store and at Barnes and Noble.

Or directly from Miguel Ruiz.

They sell almost anywhere in Spain, but the north American branch does not show them in the web page. Maybe a direct inquiry to them will provide the information? Target carries very good sales of the rest of the line from time to time.

I have used reams of printer paper with lines printed by incomtech. Sure, you can have a 100 page notebook for 75 cents, but I can have 500 sheets for 2 dollars. The lines are faint, so they don't use much ink at all.
