Séyès (French) Ruled Paper Template

McEntire

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm new to the whole realm of fountain pens, and I am currently awaiting my order of a Pelikan M215 Lozenge XF. I thought in the meanwhile that I'd contribute somehow, and here is my contribution: a template you can print off to create French ruled paper! B)

post-75798-0-37725700-1316237406.jpg

Here is a link where you can download the file: in PDF format!

And I'm sorry if I seem a bit questionable as my very first post includes a download link, I can assure you its safe, I tested it myself! :happyberet:

The file when you open it may look a bit distorted, and that's okay as when you print it, it should look perfect.

The ruling is in color so be sure to select grayscale as your printing method if you are trying to conserve colored ink.

Thanks. My x-height has been wandering a little lately so I shall try to rein it in with a little practise on this.

Sincerely, beak.

I just printed out this PDF on some 28 lb. HP paper and having been practicing on it. I really like it. Maybe I'll use it for stationery!

I'm glad you like it, and I can, if you wish, make any adjustments you or anyone else needs to perfect or personalize it to individual tastes (like perhaps a red initial vertical line).

Thank you, McEntire. I downloaded the file and printed some pages last night, and have already started using one - a great aid in writing practice!

And welcome to FPN - nice way to jump in!

I join the chorus of thanks to you McEntire.

The paper printed beautifully and I now remember using this paper for almost the whole year in 4th grade, the year we started using fountain pens in school. I also remember doing long division with this paper because I had a childhood fetish for sharp pencils and liked to write the numbers in the little boxes. Why we had so much of this paper that year I am not sure. The Dominican nuns we had as teachers had a mother house in Wisconsin, we were all told that their order began in France as a Dominican school for Irish girls who wished to teach in France -- a few centuries ago. I doubt that the French were sending sheets of this to the US when France was still trying to rebuild its economy and find away out of Algeria -- with honor of course. Does anyone know if this type of lined paper was regularly used in any schools in the US? The school I went to was a working class school paid for in part by Sunday collection, but largely the the dioceses. No school uniforms or religious retreats, just smacks with the ruler and plenty of math and English grammar from 4th-8th grade and of course prayers in Latin. We had this paper for one year and I do not know whether they had any of it again. In grades 5 & 6 we had something that looked like notebook paper with a wide ruled line and four read vertical lines about one inch in from the left edge and a second one about half an inch from the first. The other two were about one inch from the right edge and about one inch apart. My brother a year behind me had entirely different paper that was narrow ruled with two red lines running vertical an inch in from the left edge and only about one-sixteenth of an inch and an identical pair about an inch in from the right edge, very similar to the standard college ruled paper I used in High School and college.

I live and work in a town with Illinois State University and the variety of lined papers is limited to slight variations on college or wide ruled paper. I did find some paper designed for using the Cornel U. note taking method and of course the engineering project graph paper and then two types of whole page graph or grid paper and the three or four box story board sheets similar to the Levenger storyboard pages. I have looked through office and art supply catalogs and never found that 4th grade paper again until you posted it.

Is there a collection or display of school papers or school papers from around the world that could be consulted to see of the range and variety and maybe even the rationale behind the designs.

Thanks again,

Ed

Thanks for sharing your personal and intriguing history Ed, I don't believe this was a popular ruling here in the US, but I could be wrong. And I agree that would be awesome to have a database of different rulings and their history/origins! Also I used to live in Bloomington, IL, in the Vrooman Mansion, as my father owned it as a Bed and Breakfast Inn (and it was such an awesome and unaffordable place to live), have you ever seen/been in it? I later moved to Champaign, IL as my dad worked for the U of I. Now I reside in the Tri-Cities area of Washington state.

Thanks for sharing,

Mac

Very, very nice template. Printed first time correctly in portrait.

Lines are nice and light yet still legible.

Thanks much for this!

Thank you so much for the template! I have been reading about cursive and about to jump to the practice (with a preference to the cursive taught in France) and this template is just perfectly suitable!
