I Made A Pen Stand

I saw a post here a while ago with a picture of a nice pen stand and I thought "I want one of those", and also that it would be nice if it had a place to put a bottle of ink.

There is an online service called Ponoko who will laser cut sheets of wood, plastic and various other stock materials if you upload a drawing in the right format. So I designed something.

The first photo is the laser cut cherry veneer MDF as it arrived from Ponoko. The white surface is adhesive backing paper that protects the wood surface and holds the cut sheet together. The browning is scorching from the laser.

The second photo is after the cut pieces were detached from the sheet and assembled. It goes together without any glue, just by pressing the tabs and slots together. (Alright, perhaps some of the "pressing" involved a mallet). It is pretty solid once assembled. I should have sanded the laser burn marks off before assembly; the next step would have been much easier.

After sanding and staining (I used orange shellac):

The completed piece with a bottle of Quink, a Parker 51 below and a Hero 616 on top:

This one is on my desk at work. I'm going to make another for my desk at home. I'm thinking of maybe adding a second shelf at the bottom to hold post-it notes or blotting paper. What do you think? Any other suggestions for changes or additions?

That's cool, you could make one to hold 2 Noodler's bottles, it might keep them from being as "tippy".

Well that's a lovely thing! I'm so impressed by how it all fits together, I wish I had a fingernail's worth of your talent.

I think it's great as it is, but if you wanted a second shelf for post its etc I don't think it would make it look unbalanced. Will you go for wood again, or try plastic for a change?

Thanks for sharing

It's all personal, but if it were me, I'd leave it this simple - don't think you need the other shelf. If I had to be very picky, the only thing that hits my eye is the part where the back upright meets the side uprights; that difference in height disturbs a little - again, a purely personal observation. That's all - a very neat and straightforward design, and I like the way the laser burn highlights the joints; 'expressed' joints.

Sincerely, beak.

It looks great. Having done some woodwork and refinishing furniture, and you are the only person that will see the imperfections. You see it piece by piece everytime you look at it, where as everyone else sees the whole finished product. I also do the same thing when painting.

I really like the look of this stand! That is awesome! If I may be so bold, what were the charges from Ponoko to perform the cutting, and do they provide the wood or did you provide it to them?

Really nice? Any thoughts about commercializing it and selling it in the market place? I would buy it just to have pre-cut MDF pieces which are ready for assembly...

No dear. I don't care what they said about it on FPN. You are not getting a laser cutter. :roflmho: :ltcapd:
