Four Purples With Flexible Nibs

Here is a comparison of four purple inks written with flexible nibbed pens. They are:

  • Levenger Amethyst
  • Montblanc Violet
  • Caran d'Ache Storm
  • Rohrer & Klingner Scabiosa

The first two inks were written with a Conklin Endura with a very flexible Toledo nib. Unfortunately, I discovered that the nib has some tiny cracks, so I had to put it away until I can get it repaired. I used a Waterman's 52-1/2V with a #2 needlepoint nib for the second two inks. All four of these inks are very well behaved with flexible nibs.

I started with the more vibrant purples and worked my way to the grayish purple of Scabiosa. I think all four colors are excellent.

The scan tends very slightly more vivid compared to the actual inks.

Lovely! I've been wondering what the Storm looked like IRL. Your penmanship is so elegant; thanks for the eye candy. :clap1:

Ah, good to see that Montblanc violet still wins...though Storm takes a strong second place.

Excellent and beautiful display. Thanks!

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

Purple's has grown on me.

The shading was more than I expected so MB gets moved up.

Thanks for the view of some very nice shading.

What paper were you using?

Based on the dots, I'd say Rhodia.

As a fan of purple inks, you've just made me want to go on a shopping spree. :notworthy1:

That Levenger Amethyst is gorgeous beyond words--it's just so vibrant, that Scabiosa and co. seems to pale in comparison. I've never owned a true, purely purple ink before--I prefer those with darker undertones of gray or black--but this sample has given me second thoughts.

The MB Violet reminds me of Noodler's BSIAR...are they similar hues in real life?

Noodler's BSIAR has more red in it than Montblanc Violet. Not really very similar when viewed together.

I have a lot more purple inks now and a better scanner. I'm thinking of doing another comparison.

Please do!

I am in love with Noodler's Kung Te-cheng, which is way over to the blue side of purple and the more I see of purple inks all over the spectrum the more I like them. I particularly like the R&K Scabiosa - it looks like something old without looking dead and I love the restrained elegance of it. I like the brighter purples a lot but the Scabiosa is definitely purple without being in-your-face about it.

If I had the funds right now I might buy a bottle of each!

These are different breeds of purple, to be sure. The MB Violet is much more red - it's more on the burgundy end of the scale. The shading in it and the Lev Amethyst is beautiful to behold.

I was looking for a business-like purple when I discovered Scabiosa. It's my go-to purple when I'm being serious. The vintage look goes well with my vintage flex pens and supplies great shading that I can't notice in the sample above. Trying to compare these inks using differing line widths is a case of "apples and oranges." Scabiosa is way better than that sample.

There was a thread a couple of days ago where the OP was looking for a fading or old-fashioned looking purple. I'm trying to rememeber now if Scabiosa was one of the suggestions (if not it should be).

As for me, +1 on the Levenger Amethyst. I'm thinking that it's reminding me of the Visconti Purple LE that people were raving about a couple of months ago.

Very true, a better comparison is using the same pen for each ink, but in this case the nib in my Conklin Endura developed cracks. I've since had the nib repaired by Greg Minuskin, so at some point this summer I'm going provide samples of these and some additional purple inks using that same fabulous Toledo nib.

And Scabiosa is a fabulous ink; in fact, it is the only ink I would hoard if it were discontinued.
