Batarde Script

This example was written with two Pilot Parallel pens. With their change of stroke direction capabilities, and exceptionally even ink flow, these pens are very easy to use.

A lovely execution of the Batarde script. What is the origin of this version of Batarde? The one I learned has a more Gothic look (a style developed by my teacher). The version in 'Art of Calligraphy' is somewhat different than your example as well.

I don't have Pilot Parallel pens but it seems like they'd be a joy to practice with.

Very nice!

Only the script looks very difficult as it requires all sorts of angled strokes - especially the last five letters of the alphabet must be pretty testing to get right.

And I guess that these particular letters made you use the Pilot parallel pen. Aren't they the only italic non-dip pen that can make long enough strokes with a corner of the nib due to their unique "parallel" ink supply system?

Thanks for posting the example, Z.

Salman,

I written this version of Batarde for many years and I've no idea where it came from. There are many variations and they all appear to be valid. I used the difficult form of 's' and 'd' for fun and because they are different!

You're right Zed - the Pilot Parallel pen makes manipulation easier than with conventional nibs and it can write with ease in any direction - and yes, the nib turned on its corner can create hairlines of unlimited length.

Caliken,

Excellent illustration! Thanks for sharing such lovely work.

According to my "Calligrapher's Bible," Batarde is the French version of the English Secretary script or German Fraktur script. The origin was from late 13th century and by the middle of the 15th century Batarde departed from the Gothic origins as a "sophisticated hand." I think if you are already fluent with the Italic script, then Batarde is a fast writing alternative that resembles a bit of the Gothic script. There is a half "r" and a different lower case "a" that part of the Batarde family.

Wow, that's a script I haven't seen very much. I don't think I've ever seen that very distinctive form of "d" before. Thanks so much for posting this wonderful example.

And Signum1, thanks for the historical information. I really appreciate the info.

Haven't seen that form of d, v, and w before. Otherwise it's pretty close to my father's style of printing! :yikes:

Do you have a full set of capital letters in this variation of Batarde? It's simply beautiful!

So beautiful. Another something I'd love to learn if I could wedge another 12 hours into every day. Think about trying calligraphy often, but maybe it's best to just enjoy the work of practiced masters.

@Ken

This is a really nice Batarde I haven't seen executed in this way before. Do you mind if I use it on a birthday card for my niece?
