Fixing A Sheaffer Desk Set

Hi, I asked this in the new member section - which was probably not the place for it. I have a Sheafer Desk Set (502H), and the pen holder on the ball pen part is cracked. Epoxy? Model cement? Any suggestions for a durable fix?

Thanks,

Jim

It looks a bit like this:

Plastic holder, no swivel. The set has both a ball pen and a fountain pen. This photo is from the web, the actual ball pen unit (the one that is broken) has a chain. The plastic tube that holds the pen is cracked. I take it that the plastic is phenolic or styrene, no? If phenolic, epoxy, correct? If styrene I think I could use model cement.

Any help would be appreciated.

My first thought would be to replace the funnel, it should be a relatively common thing in Sheafferdom. (Lets page Roger-the Sheaffer Desk set King.)

Second thought would be a solvent weld and smoothing and polishing as needed.

I'm not sure what it is made of but I'd try something like MEK or THF as the weld agent. Try the solvent you have on the inside of the funnel where it can not be seen as a check to see if the material softens enough for a weld. Before you weld the break make sure it is as clean as you can get it and make sure it is dry. I usually hit it with a hair drier to be sure.

I have a two fountain pen desk set with a marble base. One of the pen holders is missing and I would like to replace it. Does anyone have a spare pen holder? The pens are white dot cartridge pens - 5000, circa 1974.

Hello, All: I am seeking a replacement part for the Sheaffer desk set pictured. All ideas are appreciated.

Have you tried the WTB or Sheaffer forums here? There are a number of people there who have Sheaffer repair/replacement parts that might be able to help you out.

Good luck.

Plastic holder.

OK, here's what I did with a plastic holder on a Jotter desk pen (I'm not sure it was a Parker base, but it happened to be a great fit for a Jotter desk pen I had...). Warning to the purists here- you might want to skip the next few sentences:

I took another ballpen whose barrel had a slightly larger diameter and gently pushed it into the holder to "open" the crack a bit. Then I put a very thin amount of super glue in the opening, took out the "auger pen" and pressed the holder to seal the mend. I was able to wipe any excess glue as I was squeezing, and it ended up a pretty clean mend. Given that the pen/desk holder do duty in an upstairs bedroom next to a computer, plus the fact that this is not a "vintage" set that I would ever attempt to sell as such, it worked fine. Also, given the foregoing, not to mention the fact that I realize super glues can often do strange things to certain plastics, I went into this understanding that this might be an "oh, well" moment.

If yours is also a "utility only" pen, this might work; if it has more value, you might want to have a few others weigh in before you pull out a tube of super glue.
