Nerd alert -- return of the pocket protectors...

OK, I admit it. I went out and bought 3 vinyl pocket protectors at Office Depot ($0.99) today for the first time since my true nerd days at MIT in the 1970's. In the past, I'd only carry FPs in my briefcase or portfolio and never in a suit pocket. Wanting to keep a nice pen in my pocket and not risk distroying an expensive suit I decided it was time to wear some protection.

Anyone else guilty of this? Is there a 12-step recovery process?

I've been meaning to ask this question for some time now:

How come pocket protectors are seen as some sort of ultimate geek gear?

I think it looks nice as long as it is well made-- It stiffens up the pocket, too, right? Sort of like a collar insert for a yukata?

I have reached the age of 55 without ever having used or bought a pocket protector

Do I have a problem? Well no because I carry a "51" Aero in my jacket pocket :ltcapd:

What is a pocket protector?

Where is the pen that should be hanging from this cap?

Where did that blue splodge come from?

Actually, I have never seen one of these things and most blue splodges seem to come from leaky cheap ballpoints.

My Dad used to use them. They came in cheap vinyl, often given away as advertisements. They often had a front flap with some company's logo and contact information. Absolutely zero or negative fashion sense. Geeks were seen as too concerned with the functionality of the things to care about whether they looked good or not.

These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value.--Thomas Paine, "The American Crisis", 1776

I've always had to keep a bp, mp and eraser stick in my shirt pocket. The clips tear up the pocket, and since I have to buy my own shirts, I use pocket protectors. If it bothers other people, they should try to get their own life.

YMMV

Next after the pocket protector you'll be getting those aluminun date things you attach to your watch band. Look Out !!

This is funny. I was just thinking the other day that I might want to get a pocket protector, since I'm carrying multiple writing instruments most of the time.

Here's a fun source.

It can't be any worse than the key card clip (with company logo, o boy) I wear clipped to my belt.

A pocket protector is a pretty smart thing to use with FPs, I should look into that.

Isn't sanity really a one-trick pony, anyway? I mean, all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy . . . ooh hoo hoo hoo! . . . the sky's the limit!

You are definitely in the target market for the pocket protector industry. :)

Pocket protectors are unknown in the UK. I went to the UK's closest MIT equivalent, and use a Reverse Polish Notation calculator, but I even I have never seen one.

Possibly now the idea has been put in my head I'll buy one off the Bay...

Being a gullible schmuck, I went out at dinner and bought a pack of three pocket protectors at Staples. $2.15 with tax. Coincidentally, the same price I paid for the Marvy "Le Fountain Pen" I bought this morning.

You people are doing something to me, aren't you?

And if I do this will I attract lady engineers?

Umm... the irony is, I'm going out with a biochemist. And before that it was a genetic engineer. (Ie a biochemist with delusions - or possibly ambitions - of godhead.)
