Century Ii Nib Section Disassembled

Just in case anyone has wondered what's going on inside one of these little things, here's one of mine. I'll try for better or more interesting pics if anyone wants to see anything in particular.

edited for spelling.

Hi

Thanks for the pic. Is it a friction fit? How did you get nib/feed out of the section?

How easy was it to replace?

Thanks,

Harry

sometimes you can easily pinch the nib and feed with thumb and forefinger and with a bit of finagaling, pull it right out. sometimes you have to use a little heat to expand the section, sometimes you have to use a knockout block and hammer it out (i use a 5lb sledge) from the cart/converter side. i had a pen once that i could just barely pull and it would all come out lickity split. easy as that. some require more force. but not a 5 lb sledge! geeze! that's insane!! :roflmho:

It took a bit of convincing to come free, and could probably do with some shellac to hold it in place when its refitted as it does come apart quite easily now, but yes I believe that it was friction fit. I got it out with the long end of an allen key (like a butcher) and pushed from the cartridge end, it didn't require too much force.

that's what i figured. what i've used is a cut down to size piece of kabob stick. they're soft enough to not damage anything, but hard enough to push it out. they seem to give pretty easily and only get a few uses, but they're cheap. i wouldn't use shellac to hold it in though, you don't want to get that in the channels. bad. just be sure it's oriented properly. some feeds/sections can only go together one way because of a groove or a flat side (lamy safari has a groove) but some can go any way, but should be lined up carefully b/c there's a flattish side that helps it go in there nice and tight.

I have a Century II where the black plastic gripping area tends to rotate on the Golden metallic part. Does the front trim ring unscrew allowing one to remove this gripping section and re-glue it?

Thanks!

Hari

I've read many times about such a problem, but I don't have it...

I'll take a look for you, I have one somewhere that does that as well. If it helps I think that part is separate from the feed housing so it shouldnt cause a leak.

There's no obvious way to take the section apart to get at the gripping section,

I'm open to suggestions though.

These pens are lifetime warranty; send it back to Cross - they'll fix it for free!

Apologies for resurrecting an older thread, but just in case someone else tries it...I tried something similar after my feed broke (just as it exits the assembly). I made a mess of the inside of the section, and (I think) ruined the top of the feed so I'd urge caution on this one. Maybe I just tried too hard!

Ended up buying a new nib+section, and unfortunately it's chrome/steel where before I had a chrome/gold combination (not medallist), so I'd love to swap the steel for my gold nib but doesn't look like I can do it without risking the replacement assembly too!
