I recently acquired a set of four dip pens which are the subject of this review. I have included pictures of some other dip pens which I have collected over the years.

Packing - the new pens came in a hazel wood box lined with green velvet, each pen in its own slot. The box is very well made with two catches.

Appearance and Finish - the four pens are made of coccobolo, brazilian hardwood, walnut and hazel wood respectively, hand turned. each pen ia 7 inches long and 0.5 inches thick at the widest. The gripping part has a waist which makes for writing comfort. The nib is held in place by a cross slit wooden plug in the business end of the pen. The finish of these pens is wonderful with the full beauty of the wooden grain brought out by polishing. The back end of each pen is decoratively turned

Nibs - each pen came fitted with its own steel nib, all four are fine and wonderful flex nibs.

Writing performance - dip pens take you back to the golden age of writing, each has its own characteristics line width, line variation and nuances. The nibs may be plain of with a reservoir and hold ink by surface tension. Generally they are not as smooth as fountain pens.

My old dip pens - over the last three decades I have collected some 50 dip pens, the holders varying from wood to plastic to metal, thickness from 0.4 to o.86inches. Some pens are made in Germany but most are from art stores in Lucknow. The nibs include William Mitchell, Speedball, Perry & CO. Heintrz and Blankertz, Esterbrooks and Mico. It is fun to practice lettering with these nibs and I’ve a couple of inkwells which go very well with them.

Ashish,

Did you buy this dip pen set in India or abroad? Looks very nice. I have a lot of English vintage dip pen nibs but not the fancy holders like yours.

Best,

Hari

Awesome review. I really enjoy it. Emotionally, I have always linked my feelings about these pens to the sublime thrill of film noir. Whenever I see a Mafia underboss crossing out his enemies' names on the screen, there's always a zoom onto the tip of the his dip pen. Like the burning tip of a cigar, dip pens exude a very distinctive personality.

A man's real possession is his memory. In nothing else is he rich, in nothing else is he poor.
