Dj Kennedy

In the pen market which 1400 number is limited edition, seeing numbers in the low 300’s makes it extremely low, and seeing none for sale anywhere in the world, makes them rarest of them all.

I am talking about DJ Kennedy pens, and writing instruments. They are all one of a kind, and none are a like, since they were made, by hand, and with precious metals, and stones.

They were offered through Niemen’s Marcus, Christmas Catalogue 2 years, and that was it. I do not know of any of my collector friends, having one in their collections, and if they do, they will never ever sell.

I came across one 5 years ago, which was made of Silver, and 14K gold, but got a sticker shock, since the seller was asking $2000.00 for it, hence did not buy it.

I wish I could get my hands on one, and willing to pay even $3500.00 for one, but have not seen that model, and that was sold in less than 2 hours, after being on an auction site.

My advise to any collector is: If you find one, consider yourself extremely lucky, and pay for it, right away, since they are becoming a White Unicorn of all Limited Edition Pens.

I have been collecting pens for 20 years, and never ever seen anything this rare, and hard to find.

They are interesting pens. I never saw any that I would be willing to be seen using or that looked even partially balanced or well thought out. IIRc though he sold through NM for more like four years, but I'm old and forgetful. I agree that if you can buy one cheap there would likely be someone out there that is willing to pay the prices mentioned in the OP, but I'd also suggest that you buy low, very low, and turn down no offers. Also, take no returns.

random thought.........

Which brings up the question, are there any fountain pen collectors that "collect one of a kinds?"

AFAIK, the collectors around here all seem to be tied to a theme. For example; I've seen Parkers only, Parker "51" only, Vacumatic Parker "51" only, DJ Vacumatic Parker "51" only, and such. I don't recall any that build a collection on one ofs........... Not counting desksets.

I guess I would like to see a "post them if you got them..." thread.

YMMV

Pics? Rare pens usually appeal to a very particular group of people. I still scratch my head whenever I see bidding wars for those cheap looking transparent pens.

This is one of the stranger posts I've seen, it sure sounds like the OP bought one of these dogs for too much and is trying to "lure" a new buyer in.

  • 1 month later...

i have used designed repaired rebuilt or made pens

since

i grew up using esterbrook and dip pens

------

when i took early prototypes to michael fultz and bevy jaegers were enthausiastic

-----------

i had used parts pen nibs feeds and sections and fabricated pen bodies raised from flat sheet

the inspiration for the metal pen cases came from several classic sources

------

the ideal pen is functional well balanced durable

an overly heavy pen is much easier to make than a leghtweight pen

the chased and repoussed cases made for hard rubber eyedropper pens

are exemplary and no modern production pen approaches the skilled craftsmanship

coming directly from the hand as these beautiful works

----------

casting //machined cases look greaton a stand or in a box

but in a lightweight shirt pull and droop

-------

at one time the solitare was a dream pen for me

i made a version from sterling in the double ended ''balance pattern with lapis cabochons

chased and repoussed with a large waterman nib

craig bozorth has this work from about 1985

brad torelli was very receptive and his technique of pen making is more machine oriented

bexley and many euro companies introduced

-------------

brass tube designs evolved and feature a patinated finish that is rather difficult to produce

the designs with garnets called lady poets were patterned after ring top vest pens

------

i had been making pens before the hemingway came out

mrs ky bought the early pens and for over a year starting at the chicago pen show

don lavin also commissioned several works

max davis provided very large emerald cabochons and other stones

for jeweled pens

--------------

i got a collection of pen fanciers magazine from cliff lawrence

and atended pen shows in dc philly little rock chicago and miami

------

the neiman marcus era came after this period

-------

i made a very large pen for the pen museum in paris from 22 kt sheet rose and white gold in 18k and platinum

-------------

in 1997 made the number one gift for neiman marcus

a chased and repoussed pen with parker centennial

cased in 22k with all internal parts also in 22k

the 90th anniversary pen was the number 2 gift

a sterling body case with black onxy ends

18k forged clip and a cap band or 18k yello gold

oter gold body pens were the big pink

in the very red gold with 18 k clips and bands

all of these works came with display units boxes

and certificated hand printed with woodblocks

on arches cover buff paper

---------------

i enjoyed the publicity in pen world magazine and tv appearances

and newspaper articles during this adventure

-------

thank you for your comments

from a quick read

it is my opinion that ome of the posters

are sadly misinformed and perhaps

cannot afford my higher quality works

or perhaps have not ever examined them

the very early prototypes

were often clunky and non functional

i spent a year in experimenting

before taking a box of pens to

michael fultz

who then provided a supply of parts pens at no cost

and sold my early pens taking no commission

judd perleson was lots of fun too

and i did lots of trading in those days

----------

i am mostly doing trombones now

see the trombone forum

---------------------

i got a degree in metals from siu carbomdale and studie with brent kington and richard mawdsley

i believe my work in pen cases was in the tradition of the waterman parker mabie todd

and other high quality case

i preferred a slightly heavier gauge of silver or gold 26- 32 ga

strong yet as lightweight as possible---too light/thin is fragile

too thick --heavy

Almost the exact same text from a "For Sale" Post from Jan 17th of this year!

Except then no price was mentioned.

Great investigation. Here's the post that Glenn-SC is referring to from Jan 16th of this year:

I own a DJ Kennedy, which has made of hammered Silver, and solid gold on top, bottom, and the clip, and lower side of the barrel.

The pen is the only one in the market, that I found(through my search in Google).

DJ Kennedy made these pens only for his friends, and family, therefore are much more rare than many pens in the market.

Also the fact that he made them only 2 years, make them very rare.

If you are a serious collector, and would like to add a rare addition to your collection, please let me know.

I am adding pictures of the pen to this site. As you can see I am not indicating the selling price since, I put it for Auction at Ebay, an noticed I was asking very low price for it. Thanks.

I thought the OP said he never had one??

Regards,

i have made pens loger than two years

------

that brass pen is not exactly a spectacular example

-----

however in the pen market

even plain hard rubber pens

are considered rare etc

the penoply example no 120 is

an ''economy'' pen

---------------------

i am the creator and source of the dj kennedy pen

many of the facts stated such as lived on east coast

are entirely wrong

so those of you

who think they are dogs

have a right to their opinion

if any of you would like

Hey DJ, are you fan of ee cummings? ;) Because with the numerous line breaks, and the lack of capitals and punctuation makes reading your posts a little difficult for me. Sorry, I'm kind of old school.

  • 3 weeks later...

I am trying to sell all five of my DJ pens, all purchased from Neiman Marcus either in 96 or 97(not at once). Does anyone have any ideas?

3 are composites of 22K gold, and fountain pens. The most expensive at the time was 18000.00 with its base, another contained in a desk set with turquoise paid somewhere around 10000.00, the last is the pen by itself I paid 5000.00 area. The other two are pocket pens with a papermate ballpoint filler there were much cheaper and something like 2 or 300. I ve never used any of them. I bought them at two different Neiman Stores and not the catalog. There was one pen dealer at the Philadelphia show that had told me that there is no market for them, and I never understood that statement. They are just beautiful. Any suggestions
