show your pen display boxes/case

Recommended Posts

hi,

I am thinking to go into this pen collection path.... hope to get a good collection.. and was also thinking of getting a pen box.

Anyone here can advise the following question:

1. is it wise to put your prize pen in the pen display box... will it hv long term effect, esp to the lighting and etc.

2. will it scratches the pen?

3. which pen box to get...7 pens slot, 10, 20 or just store it in their own boxes?

Lastly, pls post some of you guys display case/box. Just for tempting all of us here and at the same time show yr prized collections! tks.

If you keep the dispaly case in direct sunlight, the pens will show some signs of discoloration. Urushi seems particularly prone to this. Pen boxes tend to be lined with felt (or some other similar material) so storing pens there shouldn't scratch them. I'm still saving up for a massive display case so for the time being, I have my pens stored in a small wooden chest I got with a collectors edition game. Excuse the blurriness of the photos.

This is what I use, far far better than the one shown above as the pens do not touch each other.

This is a cigar box I bought off the classified section here. I have slightly outgrown it--but it keeps my pen buying in check!

I am very fortunate that my lovely wife has allowed me to make a Pen/Watch space in our new home. I am turning the whole room slowly into a pen/watch/ephemera museum. Well, a modest one at least, not a lot compared to some of the people on here.

Here are a few pictures. I will lead off with my pen chest. One rule that I would tell you is to figure out how many pens you think you will need a case/chest for. THEN, take that number and multiply it by 10. I have been collecting for over 10 years now and FINALLY got smart and just got a huge chest made that I cannot outgrow! :)

I was really sad to see that the MB plane didnt make it into full production. to have one of the 3 that were made feels nice! Len is a great person.

I wondered who had the 3rd MB plane!

Come on Axel, hit us with your collection! :)

I didn't see any Ducati pens; do you also collect them or just enjoy the picture?

Very nice pen collection, storage chest, and room setup!

Yes, yes and yes, indeed. Len put in a lot of mental effort, time and money in this project and my wife and I provided him with datas about Montblanc and this plane. It is a very long story ...

So do I. And I'm happy that you have one of them.

Come on Axel, hit us with your collection! :)
You'll have to wait until August as my camera is at Canon and hopefully I get it back just befor my holidays. I wouldn't find the time to do it the next week. :(

Mason,

I just bought a 7-drawer map chest from Home Decorator that have been mentioned on here, and Gary Lehrer is sending the felt-covered drawer liners for me to cut to fit. But what is interesting is that I did not like the faux-antique drawer pulls, so I picked up 14 pulls that exactly cover the existing holes, and they are exactly the ones on your chest!

The Ducati pens are ugly as sin, but the boxes and store displays are nice if you can lay your hands on some as I did when Bertram's in Baltimore closed.

I also ride (not "cruise"), so if our paths cross, we might have a lot to share.

I don't really move the case around so the pens don't move around too much, though I'm sure if I did the pens would cop the usual minor scratches. I do actually use all my pens so even if they do get a few small scratches it probably wouldn't bother me too much.

Rather wedged into a dark the corner of the room so not easy to photograph.

Bit of a cheapskate when it comes to pen storage - I'm afraid all my money goes into buying pens.

Top photo: the two darker units are specimen cabinets which I have converted to holding pens; the lighter units at the top I bought from another pen collector.

Middle photo: one of the pen display units bought from pen collector. Currently undergoing renovation, the top drawer was completed last week.

Bottom photo: drawer from specimen cabinet. The base holding the pens can be removed from the drawer. Compartments are made of wood and are covered in thick untreated cotton velvet. Er, sorry...but all pens in this drawer are Parker 51s. I keep most of my MBs in their original packaging - as yet, the few loose ones are insufficient to fill a drawer.
