Sleuth and Statesman

Recommended Posts

I'll be heading to the Sleuth and Statesman store in Toronto on July 15th! I'm hoping to find some whitelines there, and also drool over the pens and ink.

If anyone from the area (or who has been there) can recommend anything to watch out for, I'd appreciate it.

If anyone is going to be in the area, let me know, i'll keep an eye out for you! I'm always happy to meet fellow Fp'ers!

S&S has a nice selection, especially in Noodler's inks. However they don't cary (any?) stationery or paper. I think they may have some at their sister store (Handwritings) nearby.

Laywine's (in Yorkville) carries a much better selection of stationery. They definitely carry Whitelines.

Enjoy yourself!

(oh, and if you're into cigars, stop into S&S's humidor!)

I see that you are from "Near Hamilton" which might mean that you are also "near Cambridge" and Phidon Pens where they do stock Whitelines paper, and Rhodia, and Lamy, and Noodlers Ink, and Diamine Ink, and the list goes on.

I have no affiliation to Phidon Pens, it's just a nice store run by nice people.

Excellent! They have two stores, which one will you be going to?

Akil and Murtazah are very nice gentelmen. Whitelines is available there, as well as Noodler's inks. They are quite expensive, Namiki Falcons go for $300.

I'll be going to the S&S store a few blocks up from Union Station. I'm doing a stationery and ink run, so I have a few stores I need to visit.

I saw the Whitelines in an art supply store as well (Midoco in the annex) but that was last year sometime, so I don't know if it's still there.

I'm a J Herbin ink girl (really have enjoyed the quality i've encountered) so i'm looking for those.

Or maybe a Pelikan Pelikano... (have arthritis issues, and the rubbery grip looks comfy)

*sigh* :roflmho:

If you want J. Herbin ink's you'll have to go to Laywines in yorkville. I don't think S&S has 'em. Laywines is going to have Diamine inks soon, so that might be worth checking out.

Make sure you go to S&S. They have Private reserve and Noodler's

the Itinerary is set! I may not find everything i'm looking for, but BOY i'll have fun trying! I'm starting out early, probably having to break for lunch after the S&S!

1. Eaton centre. The Essence du Papier store has a nice selection of J herbin cartridge canisters, which really allow me to "try before I buy" I use the J herbins because I really like the colour spectrum, and I'm still a bit new to the ink world, and i'm scared of the noodlers and the private reserves potentially messing up the few pens I have. since i'm still learing how to clean pens, and load them, and make sure they stay running.

I'd like a bottle of the Amber de Birmanie, though, because it goes SO well with my "go to" pen, a Wen Jue 2031. The ink and pen match almost perfectly. They also have a nice (if not a bit small) selection of notebooks and papers.

2. Sleuth and Statesman. I'm specifically going for the "ooh WOW!" factor that has been expressed by many people here who have been and liked it. Also hoping to find some whitelines paper. (thanks to all that have reviewed it)

3. Yonge and Eglinton area. There's an art supply store a few blocks up from that mall, which has Strathmore drawing paper, which has been an excellent writing paper for someone still exploring the fountain pen arts. And it's not that expensive, so if I make mistakes, I don't feel like tearing my hair out. Also, some winsor newton dip ink, for my dip pens.

4. (If there is time) The Midoco art store in the Annex, only if I can't find the whitelines at S&S

I wanted to thank the people on here from Toronto and surrounding area for really expanding my knowledge of the Fountain pen availability in this area. Without you guys and gals, I wouldn't know where to look for half of these things! Hopefully there will be a pen show in Toronto this year, so I can go into complete sensory overload!

If you want to save yourself some time you may want to forego visiting Essence du Papier at the Eaton Centre and just visit the one at Yonge and Eglinton. It's a couple of blocks north of the Indigo bookstore (on the West side of Yonge St.). The Essence du Papier at Yonge and Eglinton is a larger store than the one at the Eaton Centre and it carries various brands of inks as well.

I didn't even realize there was one there. I should improve me "google fu" !

that would be a lot easier. Thank you!

To further adding fuel to the fire, forget the Eaton Centre and Yonge and Eglington Essence Du Papier locations and to the location in the PATH underneath the TD Centre complex (under the E&Y Tower I think). It's literally on the way to Sleuth and Statesman. They have a decent selection of pens (Parker, Waterman, Visconti, Pelikan, Graf Von FAber Castel, Lamy, Mont Blanc etc.).

Sleuth and Satesman East (the store near the Bay St. Entrance) has the Whitelines inventory. Murtaza and Akil are tops in my books.

S&S actually have three stores in First Canadian Place/Exchange Tower although they're not all called S&S. The one near the York St entrance to FCP/Exchange Tower carries a few pens, cigars and shaving gear; the one near the Adelaide St entrance to FCP carries some pens, leather goods and paper; the one in the centre of FCP on the Bay St side carries a large selection of pens and inks. What to look for: the prices of pens, which will put a lump in your throat, but they're not much worse than any other B&M store in Toronto.

thank you very much, both Bill and Rufus! I really didn't know about the alternate locations of both Essence and S&S. I'm assuming, Bill, that the PATH you are referring to is the underground "walkway" in toronto? stores have actual locations below the main levels of stores? I "googled" it, and got a map of a PATH, and it looked to be connected to all sorts of buildings. Starts at union station, which is a bonus to me.

Not being from there, and rarely getting the chance to really explore like this, i've hit the main stores I know of, and that's it. I appreciate the eye openers!

Yes, if you head out of Union Station on the PATH and head to the TD Centre complex you will find it. It is on your left hand side I believe. Great store - paper, pens and ink.

Rufus mentioned three S&S stores - I heard there is only two now - at each end of the FCP/Exchange Tower - the Montblanc boutique and the original S&S with the cigars, etc.. I was told that the store in the middle, which had most of the paper, etc... had closed. If you go there you can confirm whether that is in fact true or if it is still there.

What a fun pen/art-related trek you have planned!

Please do share the fun, what treasure you found, and where, once you've recovered from your adventure?:)

For those of us who hope to attend the Toronto pen show, the local preview will be exciting.

Was a zillion years ago when I visited Toronto.. with a leaking black and burgundy Vectors in my purse;)

Chris, I think the Toronto Pen Show is going to be held at the Airport Hilton on a weekend day. If so, you won't be able to visit these stores because they are closed on the weekends, afaik. Therefore, you would have to plan a long weekend trip - downtown Toronto on the Thursday or Friday and then out to the Airport Hilton for the pen show, likely on your way home.

:headsmack: oops, is my 'american girl assumes everyone is just like US' thing showing?

even in my small college town, shops are open for some weekend hours..we've become spoiled.

Thanks for the heads-up.. won't some of these shops be represented at the Toronto show?

There's no one in FCP on the weekend other than a few lawyers. If there were more people the stores would be open...but who wants to be in the financial centre of Canada on the weekend? Not me.

My recollection is that only Sleuth & Statesman were at the show last now (from the downtown stores referred to). Laywines was there as well but they are not downtown.
