EPENCO (Eagle Pen Co.) find in the wild....Is it

Found this interesting EPENCO celluloid beauty in a local antique mall. It has fantastic marbled green and gold celluloid and a 14K Eagle gold nib that writes a nice line when dipped. Good Iridium on the tip. No sac at all but it looks like the lever is functional. Slight brassing on the clip. Body and cap surface look like they just came out of the factory yesterday. Smooth and shiny. Black engraved cap jewel is perfect.

I just wonder if it is worth spending the dollars to get this one restored? With sales tax, I have $24.50 invested in this. Probably paid too much, but it was just a beautiful pen that needs a little love. Should I put more money into it or is that foolish? Your opinions are welcomed. Photos below.

Yes it is worth restoring. Go over to the pen repair page and search for sack replacement. Their is scads of information on how to do it. If you don't want to do it, there are also a number of folks who would replace the sack for under $20.00

If you decide not to get it repaired, here's my address ... oh, sorry, getting carried away here.

Yes, I would say an Epenco with an Eagle nib in good condition is very much worth repairing. I like the way the Epencos write very much, and I don't think it would be easy to duplicate it with a modern pen. Certainly not at anything close to the money you would have invested ever after a professional refurb job. And that particular one is a beauty! If you figure out the amount you would have to spend on The Dreaded to get one of this quality, it looks like a bargain. (OK, you might get a great pen on the first try. Or the fifth, or ...) I would say definitely get it repaired, or undertake the job yourself. This should be a good pen to start on if you are gentle.

Thank you all for your advice and offers of assistance. I sent it out this AM to a member in MD who can do the resaccing. I dipped it to try it out and it is a super smooth nib.

I just combed several antique shops/malls in South Dakota and Minnesota. You must be the --guy-- that got there a week before me and left me with the broken Wearevers and overpriced Esterbrooks.

Not me. Haven't been that far west in that past few months. This was from scenic St. Johns, Michigan.....and a local judge is the big FP collector in town, the courthouse is within a five-minute walk, so he must have missed this nice, little pen.

Same shop has two Esterbrooks with the cheaper nibs for $39.00 each. They have been there at least five years.....

I found an Epenco in southern Michigan in October. $20 plus a new sac. Is there some special relationship between Michigan and Epencos?

  • 4 years later...

reviving this thread from the grave: I was in MD visiting my parents and found this Epenco with an Eagle nib in an antiques shop for $8. It still has the lever pin and pressure bar, but needs a new sac AAAAANNNDDD the nib is kinda, well, buggered.

BUT I suspect the nib just might be able to be ground down, very carefully, as it does write when you dip it into ink; just not very smoothly. Anyway, here's the money shot. It was hard to get a decent shot but it's a gorgeous tortoiseshell marbling with some parts outlined in gold tracery, and the lighter parts of marbling are mother of pearl-y.

hahaha, hi there hot sister! Nice to meet you :D

They are very similar, the grip on yours looks thicker and the band around the cap is thinner but the rest of the design is spot on. No idea what kind of nib mine is, hopefully not a type that will respond badly to smoothing paper. I have to wait til I get paid for August before I can buy my supplies but then I'm off.

Incidentally did you resac yours? Do you remember offhand or know what size sac yours takes? Just to save me having to buy a massive multipack...

I don't think the grip is thicker.... I compare it with the pic of yours in your hands.. and is look the same to me. The band is definitely different.

Let me ask my buddy down in New Hampshire. He got it for me as a present ..... I am not sure if he restored this one, he does re-sacs all my pens... so he might know.

I'll send you a pm when I find out.
