Sherwood Green It’s magically delicious!

I am really starting to like Green ink, especially the highly saturated ones. How does Sherwood Green rate with Penman Emerald? Is it somewhat close? What would be the closest match for Penman Emarald in todays modern inks?

That certainly looks like a nice dark green. I've gone for two other variants, Avacado, and Spearmint. Maybe I should fill a few pages with both, and compare.

 

Regarding the closest to Penman Emerald, I think this comes quite close, from what I hear, and so does Noodler's, or rather Swisher's, Emerald Green (the quick dry variety).

I might have to check it out. KCat raves about Penman Emerald so I would like to find a close alternative.

Sherwood is close to Emerald in terms of saturation and lubrication. it's a bluer green than Emerald. I actually use Sherwood to "cut" my Emerald sometimes when I'm feeling especially stingy with my supply. a 2:1 Emerald to Sherwood doesn't alter the final shade noticeably (at least not in a wet nib) and doesn't alter the drying time. Sherwood does have a reputation for slow drying (some might say never) but I haven't experienced this. a lot has to do with the type of paper used, IMO. Thus far, the only drying problem I've had with any ink has been on very slick notecards or cheap, slick envelopes

You don't have to rethink! Avacado (I just can't get over that spelling, y'know) is quite a dark green too. It actuallly looks avocado green to me.

they are closer in shade - just not in saturation or lubrication. Both are very nice greens but I condense them to use them because - well, you know. I like saturated.

 

Diamine Emerald is a yellow green - sort of a washed-out Avacado.

I have never heard why they spelled it Avacado but only that it is intentional. I have even taken to pronouncing with a long A, like Ay-va with the thought that maybe they were honoring a friend named Ava.

 

Of course, now I have actually written Avacado when meaning Avocado! grrr..

I think that the closest green to Penman Emerald is Fahrney's Forest Green. It’s a very saturated green. From looking at the samples, you would bet that Fahrney's got their hands of the Penman Emerald recipe!

Nope, it's bluer and darker. I have an unusually acute sense of colour. Not that I wouldn't like to try some Farhney's for comparison of course...

 

Avacado is a delicious colour Roy, but it has a muted tone to it. It is one of my top 10 if I were to name my top 10 inks. I would put it third in the green lineup of my choice: Penman Emerald, Noodlers Standard Green, then Avacado. (I think it was named after someone or some-cat named Ava, as KCat surmises.)

I got out my samples again to took a closer look. If I had to say which was darker, it would have to be the Emerald. And again the bluer would also have to be the Emerald. They're so very close it's hard to tell. I guess our difference in our monitors adding to the difference in the scans make it hard to tell?

It's only discribed as Farhneys Private Label Ink on their website. Looks like it's 8.95 a for bottle. Only thing is I don't see forest green, just green. I wonder if it's the same or if they too have discontinued their forest green?

PR Sherwood Green is a really nice dark green, a good combination of deep and vibrant color. Sometimes I think of it as a kind of evergreen color, but not really a spruce color. (Noodler's Squeteague can sometimes take on spruce-like characteristics.) Right now I'm using Spearmint in my italic nibbed Pelikan 200. The bright, lively green jumps off the page, and looks rather striking in the italic. But seeing your review makes me think that Sherwood Green will be one of the next colors I load into a pen. (Now, which one...)

I just received an email back from Fahrey's regarding their green ink. It's the same as PR Sherwood Green. Like KCat mentioned, PR make Fahrey's private lable ink.
