Sheaffer’s Oversized Balance – Marine Green Marbled – Rare Flex Nib!

 

Offered for sale is this very handsome oversized Balance in marine green marbled celluloid. The pen is in excellent condition with just some minor specks of plating wear on the clip ball and cap band. This is the oversized model and dates from around 1931/33 indicated by the short humped clip with round ball end. The ‘pinned’ lever most likely points to a date nearer 1931 than 1933.

 

Manufactured in Toronto, Canada, the imprint is fully readable but quite lightly struck, as many of the Canadian pens of this era appear to have been. The length of the pen is 5.5” capped.

Hopefully, you can see from the photos that the colour on this pen is near perfect with hardly any discoloration. The cap and barrel are very closely matched and there are absolutely no cracks, chips or other flaws on the body. I have installed a silicone sac to enable the pen to be used without fear of discoloration from ink fumes.

 

The star feature of this pen though, is the scarce original (marked made in Canada), two-tone, medium/broad full flex nib. Flexible Lifetime nibs are extremely hard to find as the vast majority were stiff and manifold (probably to protect the lifetime guarantee). The nib on this pen is fantastic. I have included a writing sample to show just how expressively the pen writes. My handwriting really can’t do it justice. The ink flow is luscious without being a fire hose and easily keeps up with the nib when fully flexed,

 

So, in summary we have a highly collectible pen in excellent condition which is further enhanced by the rare flexible nib. These just don’t come along every day!
