Broken nib

Recommended Posts

I have a 14K nib that is broken. One of the tines snaped when I tried to adjust it. Is there a way to fix it prefessionally? If you know someone, please let me know. The one source I came across is nibs.com. Has anyone used their service?

Thanks.

I haven't personally used John Mottishaw (of nibs.com), but he is one of the experts in the field.

Depending on the damage, it may be less expensive to replace the nib (if that's possible).

It is a moore fingertip, which is very rare to find.

In that case you will have to turn to Mottishaw or Binder.

Best,

That's exactly what I would have said. Sorry about the nib!

Who is Binder? How do I reach him/her?

Thanks.

One of the big problems I see here is the pen in question... a Moore Fingertip.... a very nice pen with an unusual nib... see the pictures below

Depending on how far back the tine of this nib is broken is going to determine whether or not it is going to be able to be repaired.

Even someone like John M, Greg M or Richard B have limits to what they can accomplish...

John M does not even list a replacement nib for this pen in his vast collection of nibs...

I pray to the pen gods that I never snap the tine off of a Moore fingertip... I think I'd weep.

There are some great examples on Nibs.com where Mottishaw attaches a tine or rebuilds a nib. I imagine he can do it. Binder perhaps not, as he doesn't do retipping or metalwork himself, at least to my knowledge. I reckon Mottishaw could take care of it for you but it will cost a lot of cash- enough that it may be cheaper to buy another Fingertip to use as a parts pen. As much as that hurts.

Can you remove the nib easily? Or is it more or less permanently set in the section, like Sheaffer's Inlaid nibs?

The only metal sectioned pen I've ever dreamt about... :)

Nib is broken where the breather hole is.

Can a jeweler fix this problem? It is mostly metal work! I am not sure how to take the nib out, but I don't think it is attached to the section like Sheaffer. I will post a picture when I get a chance.
