Some purple/violet ink

There was a topic about Caran d'Ache Storm vs. J. Herbin Poussiere de Lune recently. I did a very quick comparison with dip pen and Q-tip on Rhodia paper. Sorry for the spatters and bad photo!

Poussiere de Lune is redder than Storm side-by-side, but I think it might be hard to discern if I look either of them individually. Also I think Q-tip comparison exaggerates differences (I tried correct the color, but couldn't get quite right), but dip nib writing of the first four are very similar in person.

EDIT: Forgot to explain...I used two different kinds of cotton swabs. The left column is done by brand-name Q-tips, and the right column is by generic ones. I think brand-name Q-tips have a little better absorbency and colors appear lighter :D

Thanks, Taki.

Picture looks good. The swab shows what I was trying to explain - Purple Martin has more of a blue component than Storm.

J. Herbin's ink looks slightly redder.

I forgot to add Tulipe Noire, as I usually don't consider it as purple :D Tulipe Noire's Q-tip swab is reversed :headsmack:

I also found a function to manually adjust white balance on my camera!

Thanks for taking the time to do this comparison, Taki.

On my monitor, you seem to have captured the color of Poussiere de Lune very well. That is one of my favorite ink colors. With the tones of grey, it really does look like a wine stain to me.

The color swab on the right of the Tulipe Noire comparison indicates the color I have consistently gotten with this ink. It seems much more plum than purple, but I like the color anyway. The MB Violet comes closer to what I thought the Tulipe Noire would look like. But, that is all the more reason to love the MB Violet.

Thanks all for kind words.

Frank, yes, when I use Tulipe Noire in my pens it looks more like the swab on the right (lighter). Though I like the color of Tulipe Noire, I agree that MB Violet was the color I had expected :D

Thanks, Taki, for doing ink colors of my favorite color.

My perception of purple would be like the Noodler's Purple Martin and Diamine Imperial Purple. Anything shift with more red or blue is not really purple, by my standards. I also have the Montblanc Violet which is one of my favorite inks.

Purple is such a wonderful color because of the range of colors it can tolerate. And it's hard to describe my feeling when I see something that has that exact purple that I like.

I, too, am a purple/violet freak. A splash of Noodler's Purple Wampum would look great on the scan.

Is Waterman really as blue as the swabs make it appear?

The Storm looks superb. So many folks keep praising it that I'm going to have to snag me some.

IMHO, the Waterman's violet cartridges I've been using are somewhat redder than the scan (in the direction of "deep red-violet" rather than "magenta".)

For some reason ink on the bottom half of the photo (Diamine Imperial Purple and down) look bluer than actual colors on my monitor.

I don't have Wampum but I just remembered that I had Ebony Purple sample, too :headsmack: Oh, well.

taki, your comparisons are keepers! i don't like purples (sorry, purpledog!) but this comparison is so informative. (Ditto goes for Taki's pink comparison; it's incredible).

EDIT: here is the pink comparison.

I find Waterman to be much more on the red side of purple, if that makes any sense. I'm not too crazy about it because of this. It is a very intense color. I just got my bottle of MB Violet today and it is a wonderful color, just what I was looking for. :puddle:

Thank you so much for the very helpful photo. What appears on my monitor agrees with what my eyeballs have made of the inks I've seen in person, except the Waterman, so it helps me to guess what the others look like. I am trying to hold myself back from purchasing the Ebony Purple (and Purple Martin, after the great reviews of both), telling myself sternly that I have too many purples ... Does anyone know if the PR has any water resistance? Can't ever have too many helpful photos, scans and reviews ...

edited to replace "scan" with "photo," duh. :headsmack:

Thank you, Taki! I already have Caran d'Ache Storm, and based on your photos and comments, I guess I don't need Montblanc Violet (...or do I :hmm1: ;) ).

This is the quick&wet&dirty comparison scan I posted some time ago in another thread (text written with PR Black Cherry):

I agree! I bought a bottle of MB violet yesterday (even before reading this thread) and I think it has unseated Caran d'Ache Storm as my favorite purple. It's not as grey/blue as Storm, and it's the perfect balance between colorful and subdued. And it behaves in my moleskine, another bonus!
