Fountain pen related stuff

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

You may have noticed that I am, umm, well, slightly eccentric . I tend to have a few odds and ends with me in my soft case, that I take to work everyday. Today I was on duty, and had a fair amount of waiting time. So I shot the contents of my case, as far as pen-related stuff goes.

Here is a picture:

tools02-4.jpg

I know it isn't incredibly sharp, but let's see if you can guess what it all is. Sounds like fun, to me anyway .

Other than this stuff, I have a few pens with me:

pens01-6.jpg

The Lamys are the ones I use for people to try out fountain pens. Three of these aren't inked yet. I was doing another ink review, and fell short of a few pens, so I thought I'd get the last few Safari-types I didn't have yet. Only the orange one I don't have right now. BTW, the 3 on the right are really roller balls, converted to Joys. The Joy pens are so large they only fit in my 40-pen case, and take up two spaces, the full lenght, so I found a way to make them into Safaris. Rollerballs have a "-"sign on top of th ecap, and fountain pens a "+", so they are easily distinguishable.

pens02-86.jpg

Yes. Etrurias. need I say more?

pens03-86.jpg

And a few more pens.

BTW, the two loose pens in the pictures of the 20-pen pen case, I carry in an additional 3-pen pen case :D.

Anyway, these are the pens and tools I use most...

Warm regards, Wim

(edit: spelling, spelling...sigh)

Wim, You do make us feel better with your pics. :-)

Ok, I count 12 Etrurias, of which 3 of them are 991s. So if I get another 991 or perhaps the Nuda I am well within normal. :-) It's going to be a tough choice for me since the nibs are the same on the Nuda and the 991. I went to the Swisher site and do like the Nuda look, but the 991 is also very good looking.

So only Swisher carries the Nuda? I went on Susanna's site and couldn't find it. It seems like Swisher has at least a couple of exclusives with Stipula?!?!

Some beautiful pens you have there Wim. I'm not sure if I should show this thread to my wife or not. On the one hand, she may think I'm moderate by comparison. On the other hand, she may start thinking this site is a bad influence on me. As it is, she caught me writing out an ink review, and she thought I was nuts .

Wim,

Those are truly beautiful pens. Is the second from the left in the last picture the Pentrace LE pen from Filcao? I think that color is phenomenal and am hoping that one shows up on the GB during one of my more frivolous days in the future! A wonderful collection - thanks for sharing.

Beautiful pens, Wim. The Stipulas are gorgeous...and the Lamys look so colourful....well, all the pens are beautiful!

I think I recognize the hot pink Waterman "Kultur" at the bottom of the first pic ;) (its North American twin lives here)

Now, what are some of the items in that top photo?

A portable nib grinding/smoothing kit? I know that Keith carries one around too...

And the green liquid? Liquid dishwashing detergent? (Palmolive ®?)

But what really interests me are the colourful things at the bottom....My husband thinks they are blotters.... Hey! :o What is he doing looking at my FPN screen? <_< :D

In the bottom photo, I see your famous Waterman Edson, the Pentrace LE that Ryan spotted, a Stipula, another Edson, (not sure about the next one), a modern Parker Duofold, a Waterman (model?), a Waterman Expert, a couple of pens I can't recognize and then a Pelikan M800/1000.

Thanks for sharing Wim.

Those Eturias look intriguing. I have no experience with them. Is there a review of any of them available somewhere on FPN?

I don't think there is a review here yet, Jeen...unless you count Wim raving about how wonderful they are, at every opportunity

Hi Wim,

When you say that "So I shot the contents of my case, as far as pen-related stuff goes.", are you implying that there is room in your case for more stuff, aside from the items in the photo?!?

Nice photos and thanks for doing your part to make the rest of us feel normal.

Best,

Chris

Beautiful collection, Wim! Now that a couple of people have brought it up, I'm dead curious...Is that bright, light green pen the Pentrace LE? One reason I didn't order one is that the pics last year looked like such a dull green.

I see Wateman, Pelikan & Lamy (?) cartridges, converters, loupes, a couple of grinding stones, a bottle of Herbin ink, one of Waterman ink, and maybe Visconti ink. Bet Maja is right about the green stuff being Palmolive liquid. Can't even guess on the rest!

Thanks for showing us your goodies!

Ann

Waterman Harmonie is the missing model and the black pen next to the red stripe Pelikan is not a Sailor.

Ok...so that must mean that the one between the gold Edson and the Parker is another Sailor? The cap bands look similar....That leaves the gold-capped one? DuPont?

Hi Roger,

I've resorted to having my wife read posts like this from Wim. She has reconsidered, and now thinks that I am absolutely normal!

Keep posting, Wim. I owe ya one or more.

At least I´m good for something...

Warm regards, to Helen too!

Hi Centurion,

Wim, You do make us feel better with your pics.  :-)
Ok, I count 12 Etrurias, of which 3 of them are 991s.
And I have 2 more, another Nuda, and a black one with silver trim. I think that model is called the 918, but am not too sure.
So if I get another 991 or perhaps the Nuda I am well within normal.  :-)
Depends on your definition of "crazy" or "mad" :D. Where do you draw the line? Of course, if you consider it to be the stuff displayed here, minus 1 pen, you have a little time to go .
It's going to be a tough choice for me since the nibs are the same on the Nuda and the 991.  I went to the Swisher site and do like the Nuda look, but the 991 is also very good looking.

No, the Nuda is a LE of 351 pens, not exclusive to Swisher. They do have an exclusive with the Demonstrator, which is a Nuda with gold trim rather than silver. For some reason Susanna doesn´t sell the Nuda, but I noticed they don´t carry all models anyway. But then, neither does Swisher. BTW, I think Bertram´s also carries the Nuda.

Hey, the 991 is a once in a lifetime deal, so if you think you want another one, I would say, go for it! :D

Probably not of much help here :D.

Anyway, warm regards, Wim

Hi Slush,

Wow, look at all those Lamy's! I like the clear one. It's a Vista, right?  All those pens are gorgeous!

~S!

Yes, it is a Lamy Vista indeed. That one I got to convince someone to get a fountain pen too, to get converted. I succeeded.

And I do think they´re gorgeous too! :D

Yes, that is the PenTrace LE. Actually it is # 1 of 100. They are not numbered, but I was the first person to order and pay :D. It had major nib surgery, and as a result the 3 nibs with it are an XXXF, an ItaliFine, and a 30 degree very broad sharp oblique :D. Actually, that last one is a paper knife more than a nib :D.
A wonderful collection - thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the kind words. I must say I like all of them :D, although the Edsons and the Etrurias are my favourites.

Hi Maja,

Beautiful pens, Wim. The Stipulas are gorgeous...and the Lamys look so colourful....well, all the pens are beautiful!

I think I recognize the hot pink Waterman "Kultur" at the bottom of the first pic ;) (its North American twin lives here)

Yes, you you´re right :D.

Hey! :o

Well, let´s start from the top left corner,

tools02-4.jpg

and work our way round:

A buffing cloth with two loupes on top, the PEAK NEW 22X, and a Zeis 6X.

Above that the little case for the PEAK, and a jeweler´s loupe, 30X with its case.

To the right of that a few Arkansas stones, the grey ones are SiC, and about 2000-2500 grit, one has a square diameter and another is wedge shaped and is slightly finer. The smaller, lighter coloured Arkansas stone, also square diameter, is a surgical Arkansas stone, grit size about 4000, and the round "Arkansas" stone is a Dremel emery disk, grit size around 2500. The latter also features in my nib smoothing article :D.

Above the loupes you´ll find a few syringes in different sizes, the needles that go with it, and a few coffee straws, all for doing things with ink :D.

Next to those, a bunch of converters, in two small zip-loc bags, and a little box of Pelikan converters, 26 converters in all .

Caught between converters and arkansas stones is a square tube with Pelikan M200 nibs, 5 currently, BB ones, for grinding .

To the right of all this, a fair amount of ink. I only carry emergency inks and ink I am testing :D, although that means I have 6 or more bottles with me on some days :D. The Bottles of ink are Waterman South Seas Blue, Herbin Café des Îles, Visconti Turquoise and, what else, Waterman Blue Black . The outer row of cartridges: Lamy black, Lamy blue, Waterman Florida Blue shorts, and Pilot Blue. The iner row of cartridges: Waterman Florida Blue, Waterman Black and Waterman Blue Black, a few Lamy blue cartridges, including a few empties, and a little Stipula bag with an international short cartridge.

The liitle bottle between the converters and bottled inks with the green fluid, yes, that is dishwashing liquid. You guessed it! :D Not Palmolive, though. It is the cheapest, non-perfumed stuff around, something like 33 cents for a litre or so. I always have some with me :D.

Finally, the heap of ink-stained scraps in the lower middle. :D If you look at the shape of the stains, it will be clear to any blotter user it can´t be blotters. It actually is mylar, in different grit sizes, from 8000 to about 15000 grit. I use those for smoothing of nibs, of course.

Besides these, I always have several (10 or 15 or so) large sheets with me too, from 4000 grit upwards, in a pouch in the newspaper pocket of my bag :D.

What is he doing looking at my FPN screen?  <_<  :D
 Just wait, before you know he has a second expensive hobby .
I don´t know whether the Edson is famous or notorious . But I´ll get to the pens in another post. Have to keep you guessing still :D.

They are very intriguing indeed. There isn´t an Etruria review as yet over here, but there is a lot of information in different threads. I guess I am the person most qualified, or let´s say, most biased, to do a review :D. In order to do that, I want to do something about my digicam techniques first, though. Maybe we can convince Vanessa, Roger or Centurion to do one first? :D
