Gothic pen?

caligatia

Recommended Posts

I admit it. I was a goth girl when I was younger. And while I've given up the angst and the makeup, I still like the music and the sense of style.

So what I'm wanting is a gothy pen. Something that looks like Morticia Addams would write with. Something I can fill with Noodlers Nightshade and write Byronesque poetry with. (Well, okay, maybe just school notes. Hee.)

Two requirements: pen must be under $50, and I love fine lines. (Although if I find the perfect pen, I can have the nib ground down.)

Any suggestions?

Rotring New Orleans Matte Black:

http://cgi.ebay.com/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem...em=220111799384

Not my auction, just where I found one. Unfortunately the one in that auction is a medium point, but I know what I think of when I hear the words "New Orleans medium."

Is that sort of kind of it? Back when I was wearing nothing but black (come to think of it, it's still true) I had to settle for a Parker Vector in black. I think I would have liked the New Orleans better.

Of course, what you really need to do is carry an ink bottle and a nice dip pen with a long holder.

Also maybe the Pilot Knight? Nice clean lines in black and chrome, a great writer. Not as obviously exotic-looking as the New Orleans.

Laban should have something filigree-y that should fill the bill.

The spiderweb pattern in the first column perhaps?

IIRC, these pens have steel nibs and were around $50..

Morticia Addams? Gee, you might want to look into Duke pens, which come in some more ornate styles. I'm more of a nib/functional type, but there's the Duke Ruby (image courtesy of www.isellpens.com, although it might be too skinny for you, and the Duke Viceroy (image courtesy of www.hisnibs.com) , although the nib might be too medium for you. Although that Laban spider webby pen looks quite Tish ...

Thanks for the suggestions! They're all really nice pens. So far the spiderweb Laban and that second Duke are really tempting me. The problem with the Laban is I can't find it via Google. Grrr! Anyone know of a seller?

Keep posting, please. You're giving me all sorts of ideas. :)

Oh, no need to apologize! We have so many pen sellers who are members here - like James P, Parkeville, etc.

*whimper* I went looking for Duke pens and found this:

http://www.akideal.com/D2-RubyDuke.html

Please don't anybody buy one. I don't get paid until next Friday, and I really really REALLY want one of these... :)

Caligatia,

Not to worry -- hundreds of people could buy, and still there would be more. I have been following this seller for some time, and bought a few pens from them (fast shipping, reasonable prices -- not affiliated) they have a HUGE stock, and if you click the ask seller a question, they will confirm whatever stock you ask about.

Caligatia,

I almost forgot. Todd at isellpens.com also sells Duke. I bought one from him also. His is a regular site, not eBay. Look under Duke, and also look under closeouts, as he sometimes has Duke pens there.

Please excuse my ignorance (and the off topic question), but what qualifies music as being goth? I was too old to be one by the time I learned about goths, but I have always thought that it was an interesting subculture.

Can't be. The site isn't making a point of anything being "The last 3" of their kind, and offering to return your money if you don't get it in on time to grab one of these bargains :roflmho: .

In any case, I've just sent them $6.99 via PayPal and so we'll see. Jeez, isn't there a thread around here about impulse buying :headsmack: ?

Well, there's a fair amount of goth music I don't like. (What's that rule that 90% of anything is (bleep)?) I'm pretty old school -- I like Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure's older stuff... A lot of goths (myself included) are into the current EBM and synthpop artists, like Covenant, VNV Nation, and Wolfsheim. There's a huge amount of industrial crossover as well -- Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb are old favorites. And goths my age (thirties) tend to like 80's New Wave bands like Depeche Mode, because that's what we grew up on. And if you go to an "Old Wave" night at a goth club, you're likely to hear some 80's alternative like The Smiths as well as some 90's classics like Nine Inch Nails.

The bands I mentioned are the most well-known, and their stuff is easy to get hold of. There's tons of other good music out there if you're interested...

What language are you speaking? :o I can tell being stationed abroad has left large cultural gaps in my sensibilities.

Thanks for the education; I'll check out some of the bands that you mentioned (I already know most of the older ones). I see that we are about the same age. I guess I just felt to old to be a goth when I was in my early to mid 20s. It might be because I had kids by that time or maybe it's just that you are just a more adventurous person than I am. Anyway, good luck getting the Duke ruby. If you don't mind, let me know what you think of it; I've wanted one for a while but I never got around to getting one.

Sorry, I should've mentioned that I posted images of Duke pens from the isellpens and hisnibs sites because both are excellent vendors and have decent prices. But not as good as that akideal link you posted, at least on that particular model! Good luck on your purchasing -- hope you enjoy your pen!
