Waterman Hundred Year Pen

Recommended Posts

I am completely beside myself with shock. I just received a box with pens from a recent eBay purchase. The main pen of interest was a Waterman Hundred Year pen. The jewel is crystalized but I was hoping for a restoration project.

As I was checking it out the pen, the cap fell off, rolled off the edge of my desk and dropped 24 inches to my linoleum kitchen floor and broke. AAGGHHH It was a very nice pen! I have only had the pen for five minutes.

I was going to post a photo asking who could fix my crystalized jewel. Now I don't know what to ask.

OUCH! I feel sorry for you.

One time I had a Empire set in Nassau, a Waterman 20 overlay, and a Parker snake in my hands at home. I put them down, and I bumped into them. All fell to the floor, and the empire was dented beyond repair, the 20 was crackes all around, and the snake barrel broke in 2.

Oh, that was clever - I was staring at the screen with my mouth hanging open at how anyone could actually have those three pens in one hand at one time and then let them fall! Got me.

May we live, not by our fears but by our hopes; not by our words but by our deeds; not by our disappointments but by our dreams.

I'm guessing that can be repaired - try the usual suspects for a definite answer.

Well I am hoping......... I really need a new cap.

The nib is just incredible.

I read an earlier post saying the Hundred Year Pen is a good pen but cursed by brittle plastic. All I can say is AMEN.

I'm so sorry that happened. I hope you get it fixed. I LOVE my Waterman Hundred Year pen. It's a bit beat up looking but the nib writes like butter -- one of the most flexy fountain pens I own.

Paul, you might want to rethink this pen thing. I mean last week it was an eyedropper, now it is a Waterman 100 Year. Not a good track record my friend.

If the crack is clean that should be repairable if it is celluloid. I am not totally up to speed on Waterman pens (probably should read up on them though) so I cannot recall what the material was.

Now, go get some real nice and thick rubber pads for the floor. Best to cushion that floor before it kills some other pens. Come to think of it, you might want to get some pads for the walls if you plan on "inspecting" more pens in that room. :roller1:

Hope it works out, I hear those are nice pens.

Cheers,

SG

I am painfully aware of my recent track record! :angry2:

Ten years of pen collecting and the only two boo boo's have been in the past six days! (do we have a little icon with steam coming out my ears?) I am very annoyed with myself.

Try and see the bright side of this Paul................................... uh, well, hmmmmm.

Or just chalk it up to a bad week and keep on truckin' :D

Things will get better, you pen will get fixed, and you will get over this little "episode"

Cheers man, keep a stiff upper lip.

Hi Paul,

Sorry for the accident !!!

Sometimes we get overconfident and it is when s**t happens!

Don't let this be a nuissance and keep up - it is a very nice pen (I wish it was mine crack or no crack!!), and it is repairable.

Good luck if You decide to repair it or to hunt for a new cap !!!

Hi Paul,

I'm sorry to hear of your problem, I know by experience how frustrated one can be !

I don't know if it can comfort you, but simular things already happened to all of us.

Major problem is the cap repair, because finding a replacement cap will not be easy.

Being a fresh clean crack, the cap can most problably be repaired.

If the material is celluloid ( but I really don't know) applying a thin film aceton on the seam & pressing the parts together would weld the parts back together.

Aiming to reinforce the cap edge ,I would suggest to turn the cap end diameter to a slightly smaller diameter off ( 6 mm far after welding) & install a tight fitting brass ring over the cap. This would avoid breakage when screwing the section tightly in the cap.

I know this is a delicate operation since the material is rather brittle, but i think it would work.

Making a new transparent endplug on the barrel is no problem, I already done several.

Recently I made a new endplug on a Waterman commando pen for Badrj -a fellow FPN member - who reported back on the repair on the board. I'm sure other specialists repairers/ board members can do this repair for you.

Wishing you succes,

Regards, Francis

  • 2 weeks later...

Too bad about the fall. I have been looking at an old Hundred Year Pen for some time now. It looks like it's in pretty bad condition. What should one expect to spend on one of these pens? The nib looks like someone dragged it behind a truck on a cement road....

Yes, it's a bummer. I still haven't decided what to do. Even if I fix the cap it won't be strong and probably not advisable to post it. I think you can get a nice restored Hundred Year Pen for $150 - $250 dependind on the color. It seems that the transparent red and blue ones fetch the highest prices.

Ouch! That really hurts. Richard just posted an amazing repair he did on a Waterman One Hundred Year Pen. You might want to look on the Waterman Forum and consider giving him a call.

Change is inevitable, except from vending machines.
