Sharing some Japanese / Chinese Pens purchased from Calcutta pen hospital recently. On many of these I had to do some work- but satisfying at the end!

  1. Lily 79 : Bought for Rs 200. Work done on the pen- cleaning and polishing. The nib is gold plated steel nib , writes too smooth. A very well preserved pen from the 1970’s. I like the nib design.

All Steel Hero 330- model Golden Star:

Bought for Rs 200. The pen was very dirty-after cleaning and polishing the body looks quite good, very slight chrome damage at places. The section was opened up and all dried up ink cleaned. A new hero nib was fitted as old nib had corrosion damage. Nib, collector and section were aligned in the same line, and the sac was fitted.

Japenese pilot [ do not know the model number]

Bought this pen for Rs 1000/-. Only work done is cleaning and nib setting/smoothing. The gold colour patina needs a plating renewal by jeweler. The fine nib took a long time to make smooth, now writes excellent. The sqeeze filler press bar is fitted wing sung! Later that was replaced by a pilot one. Once the plating is re-done , this would be a very nice looking pen.

Two pieces Youth 208 [ Chinese]:

Bought these without nib for Rs 100 each. Cleaned and fitted STYCO nib bought earlier from Mr. Riyaz. The pen required a lot of cleaning and polishing but now looks OK. The new nibs are very fine tipped and needed a bit of smoothing and flow adjustment. Now working smooth. In one pen there is a minor plating damage on the cap band plating. Aerometric filling system.

Spiral Decoration Hero 330

[ Pen is marked TEMPLE OF HEAVEN] : The body had to be cleaned well. This pen was lying in dirt for a long time, but after cleaning and polishing the extent of preservation is found to be very good. There was dried ink inside the section and consequently the nib was corroded. The section was opened and all parts cleaned, new hero steel nib fitted. Now working good. The ink sac was renewed.

Cost price Rs. 150/-.

White feather 608 :

This is a beautiful and reasonably well preserved 1970’s Chinese pen- I had seen this pen in my father’s collection. The pen was externally clean enough but the nib was corroded due to dried ink and one of the tynes broke off after writing a few lines.

Section was dismantled, cleaned and a steel Hero nib was fitted.

Please note that the internal parts of this pen has different dimensions than Hero 330/329, so cannot swap parts! There was a play between the section and the collector, so put two wraps of cello-tape, now working better. The new nib needed a bit of smoothing too-now writing very smooth.

Cost price Rs. 200/-

Wing Sung 612 All Gold body :

This one is a perfectly well preserved 1970’s pen- last owner must have been a pen lover !

Not one scratch on the patina.

The pen was however not clean inside, needed lot of flushing and the nib needed a little rubbing to smooth out roughness. This apart nothing else had to be done. The pen looks way better than the photo!

Cost price - Rs 500/-

Pilot Japan open nib [ do not know the model number] :

The body and the cap patina is pretty well preserved. Filling mechanism has a squeezer outer tube from Wilson. The ring band on the barrel was thinner than required so the barrel fitment inside the cap was wobbly [ in fact, the collar has deepened over time]- I added one extra ring to make the fitting normal. The nib was corroded inside the section due to dried up ink- changed the nib with an NOS Indian Pilot nib and smoothened it- now this pen is working normal. The feeder was a little loose inside the section, a wrapping of cello-tape sorted the issue.

Cost Price Rs 250/-

HERO 340 [ all Gold colour body] :

This pen is fully functional, but the gold patina is scratched off moderately. A plating job is required. I have cleaned the pen and smoothened the nib a bit, but I did not ink test the pen.
Cost price - Rs 150.

Hero 330-

Bright red colour barrel. Body and cap patina is moderately well preserved, but there was too much dried ink inside the section. It took some long soaking and some struggle to finally open up the section. All dried ink was cleaned but the nib, feeder and collector are jammed together and would not agree to come apart. However the ink channel is clear and ink flow is good. The steel nib [ originally gold plated] has lost all plating and badly corroded at places, but the point is good and writes well. The nib has been retained as there is a risk of breaking the collector to dismantle the nib. The pen writes very smooth with a bit higher ink flow.

Cost rs 150.

Restored this Vintage Ta Tung 707, but cracked up the section [ the plastic is very brittle]. Ink is seeping out a bit and making the finger dirty. As repair I am putting layers of CA and plan to do a buffing job later on- most likely it would work.!

This corroded nib however did not last long. After two hrs of writing one of the tynes broke off. Good thing however was that the feed and nib could be easily separated now- liquid ink is perhaps the best solvent for dried up ink! A new Hero steel nib is fitted. Noted that the collector was cracked and seeped ink was spilling over- one wrap of cello-tape took care of that. Now working satisfactory.

Yesterday's visit to CPH- picked up some old and interesting pens for restoration. The first one is a Japanese SWAN, it has leaking squeeze filler lube and corrosion on the nib ,well preserved other wise. Riyal Ali would find me a good nib and a good squeeze filler.

Lily 808- another interesting design pen from the same lot. The section hole is square and the nib and feeder is of square section. The nib is however badly corroded, Mr. Riyaz Ali has assured me to find a replacement nib. Otherwise a well preserved pen , paid Rs. 150. This is a squeeze filler. Interestinly, the ink Channel is cut olny on one side of the square section feeder!
