My Currently Inked Pens On Fountain Pen Day 2014

My currently inked pens on Fountain Pen Day :D (will probably take off to the gardens or something and just shoot pics and take notes with the pens, and amend the journal most of the day).

http://static.karlblessing.com/pens/fday/2014/inked_small.jpg

Click here for a larger 1920x1440 view for better detail (kind of rough on the edges since I used my 17mm f/2.8 lens for the shot).

Slightly more detailed description of each.

BCHR (Black Chased Hard Rubber) pen that resembles the Moore L92 almost exactly minus the branding. Roughly 1910 to 1920, lever filler with an untipped 14K gold nib that has some flex to it. Currently filled with R&K Salix which is a Fountain Pen Friendly Iron Gall formula.

Montblanc 225 (~1970s) with a platinum coated cap and a 14K extra-fine nib with a platinum coating on that as well. Piston filling mechanism that holds around 1.5ml of ink. A very smooth pen for it's small line width. No flex, very rigid/firm. Inked with Noodler's Black Eel (a lubricated black that's waterproof, eternal, forgery-resistant and bulletproof).

Eversharp Skyline Demi (probably mid to late 40s) in a Army/Navy color configuration (Navy Blue body and cap dome, and what was originally Red & White striated celluloud, the white has faded to green over the years), with a wide cap band and derby style top. Has a 14K EF to Fine Nib that's extremely smooth to use. Can provide a tiny bit of line variation but I don't feel comfortable pushing it. I have it inked with Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo (Moonlight), not waterproof but fairly resistant with sort of a nicer dark blue that's slightly on the subtle side.

Sheaffer Tuckaway Valiant in a Gold-Brown Striated Celluloid. Vacuum filling pen made from 1945 to 1947. Has a 14K 2-tone Triumph nib with roughly a Medium sized line width. Filled with Noodler's Black Eel like the Montblanc mentioned above.

A Sailor Pocket Pen (Late 60s to Early 70s likely, mainly guessing from the exposed feed design and the stars, hey if you know, I'm all ears), has a 14K nib that writes roughly an extra-fine, VERY smooth with a nice soft springiness to it. Currently inked (by syringe filling a sailor cartridge) with Iroshizuku Syo-ro (Dew on Pine Tree).

Platinum PTL-10000 in Burgundy (closer to a cranberry kind of color), it's a modern pen that you can buy brand new in Japan. Has an 18K Medium (equivalent to Western Fine) nib that's a little on the firm side. Currently inked with Private Reserve Spearmint with some +Flo enhancer added.

Lamy 2000 (post-2009) with a 14K extra-fine nib that I've adjusted to run a bit better behaved (was waaay too dry when I first got it). Inked it with Noodler's Apache Sunset which shows excellent shading on smoother less absorbent paper.

Monteverde Invincia Deluxe Nighthawk (original version with the larger carbon fiber weave, they made two versions before finally discontinuing it). Currently has a Bexley Fine nib that has lost most of it's gold colored plating (which kind of matches the pen as there's a bit of brassing on it even though I only got it new earlier this year). Currently inked with Noodler's Liberty's Elysium (a brighter blue that's bulletproof and waterproof).

And off to the side is my favorite little cheap pen ($2 or so) a Pilot Petit1 with a decent smooth japanese fine steel nib using some Pilot Blue-Black Cartridges (the blue-black unlike the sky blue seems to be very resistant to water).

In the cup (where I normally keep my pens at my desk if not in the green leather case) is two mechanical pencils, a Kuru Toga high grade with 0.5 Uni NanoDia HB lead, and an Autopoint 152G Executive Director pencil with 0.9.

The 3-pen leather case is a custom case made for me by 3Wunder.

Right now I've got my two daily carries: Pilot Vanishing Point (M) and Pilot Stargazer (M). I'm holding off on treating myself to any FPD goodies since I'm going to the Ohio Pen Show this weekend :D

I'll keep on struggling, 'cause that's the measure of a man.

Sitting around and actually inked in no particular order are:

CS 286 cracked ice 1940's, typical smooth CS nib

Watermans Canada Junior, black celluloid 1930 or 40's

Parco Canada, green grey, black & red marble 1932? with an Enduro steel nib

Unique Junior red and black marble with an unusual Waterman Junior style clip 1930's with an Irigold steel nib that needs a lot of pressure to write (duplicate nib?)

The Unique Pen was pink marble, now faded to mauve 1940's? small warrented Unique gold nib that writes well

Selsdon Pen black celluloid 1950's warrented nib. Large slim pen at 140 mm writes well but leaks ink

No name brown & black woodgrain mixture made for Watney's (brewers)1930's? (Unusually) unpleasant small Langs nib. Poor scratchy writer

CS 286 cracked ice early model mid 1930's? even has cracked ice on the barrel capping, typical smooth CS nib

Parker Victory Mk1, black celluloid mid 1942 - 5 good Newhaven nib just stamped N

Parker Victory MkV, burgandy 1960? aerometric filler with 10 on the nib. Longer than stated on the Parker site at 135 mm

Parker Vacumatic Junior Canada 'lockdown' in green marble 1935? stamped 51 with a Canadian Vacumatic nib. Two ring cap but no blind cap ring!

Acca Special, Brown (was black) hard rubber 1920-30? massive 'Big Red' at 150 mm with side lever and an equally big no 16 nib on a christmas tree feed

WHS (WS Smiths, famous British stationers - still!) Self Filling Pen black hard rubber syringe pen 1910 - 20? appears to be a pre Conway supplied pen. Smallish WHS nib quite flexible but not a good writer

The Unique Pen No 80 red hard rubber. Inserted clip. 1930's? Like the Acca at 150 mm with a normal size nib it tries to immitate the transitional Duofold with immitation black cap top & false blind cap. Finally

CS 475 black celluloid 1940's

At the moment, what I have with me here in Ohio:

Noodler's Konrad (Red Mesa Tortoise) -- Noodler's El Lawrence

Noodler's Konrad (Hudson Bay Fathom) -- Noodler's Kung Te Cheng (which is inches away from being refilled with distilled water -- or even tap water...)

Noodler's FPC -- Noodler's Manhattan Blue

Parker 45 -- diluted Quink Black

Parker 61 -- unknown reconstituted black or blue black ink

Pelikan M100 -- J Herbin Stormy Grey

That of course may change because I don't know what pens I will able to get repaired today at OPS, or what ink they may get tested with. And it doesn't include pens I didn't bring with me this weekend:

Parker Vector with an F italic nib -- currently sporting a cartridge of Parker Penman Sapphire (courtesy of FPNer Kestrel

several Platinum Preppies set up as rollerballs (with various black inks, all of which need to be flushed out)

three Kuretake brush pens and another Platinum Preppy (all with different highlighter inks)

Rotring Artpen (which also needs to be flushed out)

and another Parker 61, with reconstituted and diluted unknown blue black ink

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Happy Fountain Pen Day!

All of my pens are inked, and my students have a writing day, so they'll have the option of using FPs from the class set as well.

The only new thing is that I have a new medium nib on my Pilot VP and I've filled it with a gorgeous new (to me) purple: Noodler's La Reine Mauve. I have another new purple (Socrates) to try out tonight after work.

Not the best cell phone camera picture, but today's line up:

- TWSBI 580 with a broad Pilot #5 nib (Noodler's Blue)

- Sailor 1911 Standard with a medium nib (Waterman Purple)

- Lamy Studio Pd with a medium nib (Diamine Bilberry)

- Pelikan pen pouch

Cleaned out a bunch of pens last night, but I'm quite fond of these three. I'll be using all of them at some point today.

Happy FPD!
