Your First Nakaya

I just placed the order for my first two Nakaya's. A Long Cigar in Shu and a Dorsal Fin V2 in Aka-Tamenuri. It's five months later than I originally thought it would be, but that just makes it even more exciting. The Long is going to have a Mottishaw .5mm stub and the Dorsal a .9mm smooth-stub/cursive italic. They'll hopefully be here next week!

 

That brings me to my question, what was your first Nakaya? How did it turn out for you? Is there anything you would have changed, or done differently?

My first Nakaya was a Mini Decapod. I bought it new, on an impulse, at a pen show. After using the pen for about 18 months, I concluded it was too small for me. So, I decided to trade the pen and I got a Nakaya Portable which is a perfect fit for me.

The thread you put up on this pen in November is what inspired me to get the same pen with a BB ground to a sharp stub. I'm looking forward to see if it writes as well as it looks.

Your post on that architect's point has me intrigued. I'll have to make it down to the show next year and try one out myself.

My first and only Nakaya, the Neo Standard in Tame-Nuri, was purchased directly from Nakaya shortly after the Neo Standard was introduced. I need to get the nib replaced, it's been overworked a bit.

My first Nakaya was a "previously owned" Decapod in Heki-tamenuri. I had a 0.65 mm crisp cursive italic nib ground for it.

 

 

I love the pen. I wouldn't change it, but it is on the slender side for me. I understand the Decapod Twist is thicker, and that may be a future acquisition.

My first Nakaya was a Desk Pen in Aka-tamenuri finish with a soft/medium nib. LOVE that pen and it is such a smooth and forgiving nib. The ink flows like a river and glides with grace across the paper... just an amazing pen.

My first was a Neo Standard in Kuro Tamenuri. My second was a Naka-Ai in Ao Tamenuri. My third will be a Naka-Ai in Kikyo. My fourth will be a....detecting a pattern here?

AaaaAaaaaaaaAAAAAaaaaargh! The first time the post office has ever screwed up a delivery for me is the one with my Nakayas in it! Luckily they only sent it to the other side of the metro area so I should get it tomorrow. Not a good surprise.

After one day I realised that it was too short for me, so I went back to the shop, Aesthetic Bay, and requested a swap to a Portable Writer in Aka-Tamenuri with the same EF nib.

 

One week later, I went back and bought another Portable Writer in Shobu, which remains my favourite Nakaya out of my four Portable Writers.

My first Nakaya was purchased this past February at the LA Pen Show from John Mottishaw. I had taken a couple of favorite pens that showed how I would like the nib to end up, he watched me write for a while and took my order. About a week later I had the pen with a 0.6 CI grind on the nib. It is *precisely* how I wanted it to be!

 

I know most people end up with the urishi finishes, but I fell in love with a model turned from briarwood in a matte finish. The feel in the hand is exquisite. Some day I hope to shoot some good pics of it, but at least I documented opening it up for the first time...

 

(and, yeah, I know, the lid's upside down!)

Well I just received my Nakayas and inked them up for the first time. WOW! To say I am delighted is a gross understatement. The nibs, my god the nibs! After writing with them I have no clue why I was nervous about getting a stub and a stub/CI, they're glorious. No regrets other than perhaps wishing I had ordered more.
