Lamy 2K Came In A Different Box

Hi fellas,

Just got my Lamy 2000 in the mail and it came in a different box than it usually is in.

Pic is attached. Is this normal?

Looks like a Safari box to me.

Yeah, the Safari and the Al Star come in that. I noticed that retailers often mix up the boxes of their pens. My Pilot Metro was bought in a store and came in a weird hard plastic sleeve, not like the faux-leather box that my husbands Metro came in. Could be they took the box off to display the pen and re-boxed in incorrectly, if you bought it from a store.

Agreed - that is the type of box my Safari and my Al Star came in; my Lamy 2000 was in a silver colored aluminum box, like this one (photo from Ravens March website):

I bought my box used but the seller still sent the right box with it. I can understand mixing up the Safari and Al-Star pen boxes, but, obviously, the Lamy 2000 box is quite different and more in keeping with the design of the pen itself. I would contact the seller - unless you collect boxes, it may not make much difference to you, but you did pay for the box along with the pen and it would be nice to have the proper box to showcase the pen!

 

How do you like the pen? I really like mine.

Edit - if you bought it on Amazon, definitely contact them for a replacement; presumably you purchased a brand new pen from them, not an item that was returned for unknown reasons and then carelessly packed in the wrong box. I would not be happy!

Thanks! Actually besides the packaging the pen is awesome. It writes incredibly smoothly with Aurora Black...I've heard Lamy Qc is a bit spotty so I might just keep this one.

I had one Safari come in that box. But the next Safari came in a weird little plastic sleeve/pocket-protector. Both were Amazon purchases. FWIW, I bought a Lamy 2000 on Amazon about six months ago and it came in the usual 2000 box.

Cool - if you are happy with the pen and the way it writes, that is all that counts! I hope you continue to enjoy its use; my 2000 is not currently in rotation, but it is most certainly a keeper.

I just received a LAMY 2000 (M nib) that I grabbed on a lightning deal this Cyber Monday from Amazon (US). It didn't come in the box designed for Lamy 2000 series. I know this from experience because I also grabbed a LAMY 2000 mechanical pencil only a day before and it had the box shown on the Amazon product page. Instead, the Lamy 2000 fountain pen came in a box that is originally used with Safari and Al-Star pens--same box as shown at the top of the thread (I know this from experience as well since I had bought an Al-Star a few years ago and I remember the grilled box). Two sides of the box around one of the edges also had a clear peeling mark (suggesting that this box had been taped in the past and then the tape was removed). The box didn't have the LAMY product line brochure inside either (which my previous order for the mechanical pencil did), it only had the warranty statement. If this were the only problems, I would have not made a big deal out of it. However, the fountain pen itself also looked like it was inked before. A blue spot was distinctly noticeable on the nib. To top it all, the piston mechanism seemed very loose for several turns from the sealing point up. So, I didn't even bother inking it as I will be returning it tomorrow for an exchange and we will see how the next one turns out. Kind of disappointing that I had to get all so stressed about waiting for the deal to begin (this was not a planned purchase but more like taking up the opportunity for a pen that I had been eyeing for quite a while) and then going through all the emotions about getting excited about "claiming" it before many others and then waiting for a few days, only to find out that it was not a "New" pen after all (as promised on the product page of the deal). In hindsight, I am also glad I made this order for myself and consequently caught the misleading specimen instead of somehow ordering it and sending it for someone else as a present. Being a long-time and heavy Amazon customer, I feel quite a bit betrayed by this kind of fraudulent transaction...

As far as I know (and what I've read before), Lamy tests the 2000 in the factory with Lamy blue ink, so all the pens have been inked before, even when new. I flushed mine out when it came new with soapy water, and it turned the water blue. Mine came from Goulet though, and came in the traditional 2000 tri-fold box.

 

I've also ordered a couple Pilot pens from Amazon that came in different boxes than I've seen online, so it may just be a thing with Amazon purchases...maybe they stock closeouts or something? Anyway, the thing you mention with the piston definitely isn't normal though.

Lamy currently has 3 styles of box. All are now made from card.

 

The box that KBeezie's 2000 came in is standard for 2000, Studio, scala and Accent models. The metal box shown by OakIris above was discontinued a few years ago (shame, it was nice!).

There is another conventionally-styled gift box with an elastic closure that is normally used for other models above the Al-Star such as the cp1, Scribble etc. Sorry I don't have a photo just now.

The box that samuelkim0814 showed is for standard Safari/Vista/Al-Star and nexx models.

Mine came in the cardboard box KBeezie posted, circa 2010. An Accent I bought years ago came in the metal box, which seemed like an odd switch. The cardboard one is nice though--well finished, and I still use it for storage occasionally.

I'm wondering of most of the post-2009 models come in that box. Since they did change the sections to be stainless steel after 2009 to solve the cracking problems around the 'ears', since before then the sections were makrolon, and could crack from the stress caused at the threads.

 

So perhaps at that time they re-invented the packaging (which may make sense for any retailers that still had older models laying around).

I've never had any Lamys come in that box, they've come in another box, with that box enclosed in the packaging for some reason - that's from Amazon and CultPens.

 

Don't have a Lamy 2000 though so cannot properly comment.

Thank you for this info about the various display boxes Lamy uses or has used, Martin. I purchased my Lamy used in 2012; it was originally manufactured in 2008, which explains why it came in the discontinued metal box.

I have 2 which were purchased in different countries. They both came in the same box as these.

Seriously though, when I bought my 'modern' pen from a stationery shop in Munich in the mid-nineties, the lady behind the counter put in a cardboard box with two flaps held together with elastic. She basically told me why would I want a gift box unless I was going to give it to someone else? I bowed to her logic (still have the box with the receipt in it though!).
