Hello Everyone,

I have been looking for this pen for quite a while now, and I finally had a bit of luck and found one that I could possibly purchase.

I am having some trouble identifying whether this pen is original or not.

Please, let me hear your thoughts on it!

Thank you!

Hi nicolo,

I am new to this site however in the short time I have spent hours trying to understand all the different models.

I have a classic purchased new 35 years ago and have just purchased off ebay a 320 ,originally to replace a broken nib but now I am hooked on collecting.

In both cases there is only one gold ring on the cap. The 221, 320 and classic all look about the same . With the 221 and 320 they are advertised piston as well cartridge on ebay and other sites. Some 221's have 221 on cap ,some don't some have twp gold rings on cap some don't.

I don't know if they were sold this way originally or smart marketing by the seller on ebay . I believe that Mont Blanc may themselves done a bit of mixing to sell the product .

My attitude is these series are the cheap end and provided it is mont blanc and not a copy does it matter!

Unless of course you are an avid collector.

Yours,to my inexperienced eye ,looks like an original Mont Blanc.

Sorry nicola, To add to the above I believe there was an original 221 then they came out with a later model before calling it a classic. The Classic ,purchased new in 1979/80 not only has only one gold ring with 'Mont Blanc Germany' but also the lower barrel has a curved end over the nib ,not a saw tooth end the one you show has yet I have seen classics advertised with one ring caps and saw toothe lower barrels. The 320 s advertised on ebay have the curved and saw tooth ends go figure

There is a little confussion with the name "Classic".

Classics should show the word "Classic" on the ring, too...

The top of the cap is different, and very similar to the Generation:

To complicate matters further, in the 80s, Montblanc called Classic to a variety of fountain pens, ballpoint pens and pencils, including fountain pens 221 and 310 (plus pencils 251 and 350, and ballpoints 281 and 380) all manufactured in both black color and Burgundy.

In 1974 the feed of the Classic-line was redesigned and became more thin, the hole was also deleted.

Hey HermeniC,

How could you tell what model the late 70/ early 80 pen of this shape is?

For example my 'classic' has exactly same nib as the 310 you mention ,only non pitted.but does not have a clear section, nor does the one shown.Could mine be a 310?

No. The MB 310 cap has a single ring:

To add to the confusion, while the 221 had two cap rings the 220 had just one like the 3xx series.

I have a black pen like this with brushed finish. It says 585 on the nib. I bought it new in the 1970's. I'm sure it's genuine because I returned it to MB complaining that the nib caught on a metal sleeve in the cap when I capped it. They simply removed the sleeve and the pen has been perfect ever since. The nib feels soft and fine, very smooth and writes flawlessly. I like the snap cap too. It only weighs 15 grams full of ink. It's a piston fill.

I haven't used it much lately, but I used it a lot years ago. I tended to gravitate towards bigger pens with big nibs after that.

But suddenly I'm realizing that this is a great pen. It not only writes superbly, but has a quick snap cap, and is feather light to carry. The fine nib means that it doesn't bleed badly on the cheap paper that I encounter daily. Wow! It's like discovering an old friend.

The black brushed finish Makrolon MB would likely be a 220 if piston and 220P if cartridge.

Thank you Jar. I didn't remember the number of my MB. Armed with the number 220, I searched FPN for more info. I posted a pic of the underside of my nib here.

I got this same pen in black, the imprint on mine is Mont Blanc 221. It doesn't say Germany. The nib is marked 585 same as yours. Considering how superb a writer mine is, even in case it is not an original, it is a really great copy.
