Custom Wax Seals

Recommended Posts

I was browsing the forums and I notices several members here have wax seals. I was thinking of having one made with a custom design, but I have no idea where to have one made. I do not want to spend too much on this, but I am a bit weary on the etsy sellers for $20. I do want a quality seal.

edit: I also know nothing about sealing wax and how to use it with any sort of decent results

It will depend a lot on what you are willing to start with and how detailed your design is.

My inexpensive custom seals came from Mustom (formerly Red Comma), a Korean company. There are many chinese companies now doing the same type of seals, but for the work, I personally will stick with Mustom if I order another. Their ordering is slightly cumbersome, but the seals are just fine. Here is a thread where I discussed Mustom seals.

My vastly more expensive seals came from Dexter, a premiere English company.

Although it has not been updated for some time (call me lazy, I won't argue, it takes time), there is a sticky post at the top of this forum listing many threads about seals, and several companies are mentioned. Nostalgic Impressions, Custom Wax 'N' Seals, Letter Seals, etc. You can also do a google search.

If the Etsy shops have something you like, give them a try. Check their feedback first.

Sealing wax isn't too difficult to use, but if you plan on sending any wax seals through the mails, you need to use a supple wax instead of a traditional wax. Atelier Gargoyle makes the best supple wax, in my opinion. Even so, with modern postal equipment, there is no guarantee - unless you specifically request hand cancellation - that the seal will make it to its destination intact.

I've had a great experience with "Custom Wax 'N Seals" out of the UK. Very reasonable pricing, great communication, and good turn around time. Just google them.

Could you give an idea of what the prices would be from some of the places you listed, and any accessories that come with them, and how is the customer service at the various places? I am having a graphics designer design a logo for this, so it willneed to be custom made. the already engraved ones would not work

I paid something like $60 for mine. Got to custom choose the design. Was able to speak directly with the designer to discuss what might work best. Had a few proofs to review. When it came, it came with several preformed seals and a stick of sealing wax. I was also able to choose the handle style. Very good experience overall.

Dexter's are upwards of $700 USD these days for a highly detailed, hand carved seal. Their link has their prices. Their customer service is impeccable.

The more detailed you get, the higher your price will go and this will also determine whether any particular company has the capability of creating your design. Mustom ran me around $60 delivered for a simple seal. Ordering is through their website and not as easy as point and click. It works, though.

I'm not sure what kind of accessories you are looking for.

Most will include a stick of traditional brittle wax, wicked. Some may include a wrap or pouch. Dexter's includes a pouch, wax, and a small box with wax in which an impression has been made with your seal. Some companies only include the seal.

Get quotes for your seal before ordering. All should tell you whether your design is suitable for a wax seal. If there are a lot of fine lines, it may not be.
