Something Different: Walnut Nib Holder For Glass Nibs!

Hello everyone,

It has been a while since I have posted any of my new pens - partly because I didn't have anything earth-shatteringly different to show, and partly because my photo gear was stashed away in a closet during the Christmas Holiday...

But I thought I would pull out the photo gear and get some pics of this one, as it is quite a bit different from what I usually do, and a first for me. I had a request for a nib holder for glass nibs, which were sent to me for sizing and fit. A darker wood was requested, so went with the walnut, of which I have a decent stock.

The nib holder is about 7 1/2" long, and about 0.6" at the grip (by request). Since it has no internal components, it is quite light and comfortable in the hand. The glass nibs fit by friction into a sleeve of black acrylic, which is inset into the pen by about 3/4 inch, sealing the nib off completely from the wood itself. On the outside, the wood is sealed with several layers of soaked-in thin CA, sealing it against any potential ink spills.

Thanks for looking, and comments welcome!

Cheers,

Ken

Very cool...if I had glass nibs I would be thrilled to have this!

Thanks for the comments!

The 'magic wand' thing had admittedly occurred to me - I actually have an order coming up for exactly that - a fountain pen made to look like a specific magic wand (from the Harry Potter series) :D

OK - back to the lathe...

It looks like my last post didn't get through. That is a beautiful job! I have a couple of glass nibs on their way and was wondering how I would mount them. Did you make the black acrylic sleeve or can that be bought on line? May I ask how much you charged for that pen?

Thanks

Larry

Thanks very much, Larry.

I drilled a hole about 1.5 cm deep in the end of the wooden holder, turned a piece of acrylic to insert into the hole, flush with the end of the holder, the trimmed it and drilled into the acrylic the diameter of the glass nibs. The walls of the resulting sleeve are 2 or 3 mm thick, and the blind end of the sleeve maybe 4 or 5mm thick.

Cheers,

Ken

Ken, That's very interesting. It gives me some ideas on what to do. Whatever the outcome it will not be nearly as artistic as your work.

Thanks,

Larry

Wow. I love the shape! Very beautiful. I'm imagining a glass nib that's warmer in tone, how pretty that would be.
