Nib-Feed Gap - Lamy Safari

I've got a Lamy Safari (fine nib) that seems to write differently on every fill. After I soaked the pen overnight in water and filled it with Noodler's Aircorp Blue-Black, it is writing very wet and with a large line. I'm taking a look at the nib and notice that when viewing the pen sideways, there is a gap between the bottom of the nib and the feed. It probably extends from the tip of the feed back to the pen body for 2-3mm.

Could anybody tell me if this is normal? If not is there any way to fix it? I read about resetting a nib using hot water, but also read Richard Binder's warning that this shouldn't be tried with a plastic feed (which I believe the Safari has).

Thank you very much for the help.
