The serial numbers do not indicate the end of what's left for sale as MB distributes batches of pens to different countries and/or parts of the US. No real logic. Only real value to the individual is when MB specially reserves certain numbered pen based on the buyers' past preference. Or in Asian cultures, 8, 88 or 888 represents good luck and fetch a higher value when put in the market later on.

First, CONGRATS on a great buy. You are one lucky person. The only thing I could afford for now is the Einstein cuff links as I have been purchasing the limited edition cuff links since the release of the Maecenas pen. If I am ready to buy one of these genre, it will be the Hitchcock.

What was the nib size and will you be writing with it?

I love it when people advertise pens on eBay and state they have a rare number. Each number is as rare as the others.

I got my Einstein a month before the "official" launch. Although I haven't got the pen to hand I think my number was something like 11xx. They definitely wouldn't have sold that many before the official launch.

Enjoy the pen. Have you inked it yet?

We actually sold more than that prior to the official launch. As for the current status, there's maybe about 10 left in the United States. We waited about 3 weeks for the last shipment of fountain pens and they were all paid for before they arrived at the shop. I think another just came into the shop today, but might have already been sold.

I got mine midweek from Bond Street :) said he'd got me a low number 17x; They didn't seem to have a shortage but I couldn't be sure. Wish I'd asked now. There is also one in the Oxford PensPlus store, or at least there was last weekend!

p.s. can anybody post a pic of the Einstein cufflinks; can't seem to find them anywhere online.

Interesting to hear. Are you an official Montblanc boutique? In the UK we can get on a waiting list without paying a fee, and only pay when we collect the pen - or at least that is the personal deal I have (and I can't imagine I get special treatment). In America do you have to pay for this privilege?

It's defiantly good to hear that this pen is popular. Although I never intend to sell it, it looks like it might increase in value.

I think we can agree though that the pen numbers are pretty much random based on where they get sent and how quickly they get sold.

Same here for my local (US) boutique and no advance payment required to be on the waiting list but I believe it is based on a strong relationship and past purchases. I can't see advance payment is really necessary since if a buyer backs out, the boutique should be able to transfer the pen to another location where is there another demand.

We are an official boutique. You can definitely get on a waiting list without paying a fee. However, for something as popular and hot selling as the Einstein, if you had brought in a pen to the boutique without a deposit, and I had a customer that's willing to pay right now, the pen will go to my client. Just need a small deposit to really hold the pen. Sorry for the confusion.

Do you tell people on your waiting list about that policy? Seems to me that if someone is on the list, they should have the right of first refusal. Otherwise, why keep a list?

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

I can almost understand this rationale.

I'd expect the boutique to contact me immediately when the pen arrives at the store (and my boutique are good at doing this). I then expect this pen to be put aside for me and not be sold to someone else.

I think the key to the last part though is that I should be given a timeframe in which to collect the pen. You can't expect a store to keep something on hold indefinitely. If a time period was agreed then I would be very upset if someone off the street was given the pen over me.

If a boutique is not telling people on the waiting list that their pen is ready and there is a therefore a chance that the boutique give it to someone else who walks through the door then this is poor customer service and I agree with you questioning the point of the waiting list.

I'd also like to know what happens to the deposit. I would be surprised that if I took the time and energy to get on the waiting list then the chances of me not wanting the pen would be low. I don't want to commit to buying though until I see and hold the pen. If advanced payment had been given then is the deposit refundable?

Pic of my Einstein.

Haven't inked it yet but am going to give the M nib a try rather than going straight for my usual F, or may even be tempted to go for the EF.

It is very pretty, can't see myself using it on a daily basis. My 75th anniversary edition is pretty beat up after 13 years of heavy use and being dropped etc :(

The pens are on hold if you put yourself on waiting list. The sales will definitely give you a call two days before it arrives. If the client is not able to make it in, but is seriously interested in them, the sales professional would take down their payment information and put it on hold for about a week. I'm speaking specifically for pens like Einstein though that almost sells out before it is even released. I'm not sure what the policies in other boutiques, but every single Einstein pens we've had so far on the waiting list has had a deposit on it, and that's well over 20-30 of them. All these deposits are refundable.

-At my boutique, the client is informed is contacted prior to their order arriving at the boutique. That way, they can see it the day that it arrives if they wish to. If the client can't make it in for another week or more, they would take down your deposit just to make sure the client is somehow committed.

-If you've a deposit, it's pretty permanent that you own the pen. If you do not have a deposit, and you wish to hold it for weeks on end, or even a week for a pen like Einstein, the chances are, I'm sorry to say, but almost slim to none. As of now, once an Einstein fountain pen is in stock, it only takes 1 day before 5+ other boutiques are calling requesting the pen to be transferred because they've a credit card on hold already for that pen. It is pretty difficult to tell other boutiques that my client would like to hold it for a week without a deposit.

-Your deposit is refundable.
