Fattest Pen Ever?

Recommended Posts

Today I acquired a Ville d'Argent pen. Ville d'Argent is a brand from Netherlands. I don't own any jumbo-sized pens, but this one is the fattest pen I've ever seen.

And it has a huge nib which writes with a nice medium line. Strangely enough, it fits fine in my hand and I don't feel uncomfortable, although I have relatively small hands. But I don't think it's very good for long writing sessions.

Anyway, here are some photos. I took a photo of it among a Pelikan M200, a Reform 1745 and a Hero 616 for comparison.

Has anyone seen a larger pen?

Many of these Japanese made "Jumbo" pens were produced in the 30s - 50s. I have a Spors catalog from the 40s that shows them for sale, and here is a photo of one, still in its box. Still readily seen on ebay, they are very large, and I have seen them in various colors and patterns.

I don't have a photo of one next to a standard fountain pen, but the are very large....

Oh my, why on earth do people produce such large pens? Idk, but I want more jumbo-size pens, I know that for sure.

It has been suggested that the Japanese ones were produced for people with arthritic fingers.

Oh, it makes sense. Thanks.

Haha, great pen! I need to buy some fat pens. I don't think it's a good idea, but who says having more than one fountain pen is a good idea? Am I right?

If I remember right, I think Franklin Christoph has a pen that looks very similar to yours. Different finish but the section looks similar: http://www.franklin-christoph.com/piper-pens.html

Gordebak, the pen on the Franklin Christoph site is a Piper Stout. It's not on the main page.

Thanks Uncle Red. I couldn't find Piper Stout, but Piper Jumbo is what I was looking for. And affordable too. I might buy one.

For so long as one hundred men remain alive,we shall never under any conditions submit to the

domination of the English. It is not for glory or riches or honours that we fight, but only for liberty, which

no good man will consent to lose but with his life.

Haha! Okay, that one is fatter. Thanks!

I was researching about these chubby pens, and that looks like one of those vintage Japanese Jumbo pens.

The problem with them is that their sections are big too. I need fat pens with sections suitable for my holding.

Campo Marzio Le Grand is the fattest. An inch in girth and 6 inches long; funny cos the nib is like a #3!

The pen I write with, is the pen I use to sign my name.

Excellent review, reading threads like this often is the best part of my day in the midst of the rat race.
